Karla Sofia Gascón is now opening up about her feelings on the entire controversy that unfolded after a series of racist tweets she posted between 2020 and 2021 were exposed. The "We are the Nobles" actress who scored a historic Oscar nomination at this year's Academy Awardz is now reflecting on her actions and how the last couple of months affected her.
In her interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Karla Sofia Gascón apologized for her past actions, and emphasized her commitment to doing better in the future.
"With no excuse, and without any intention to justify any of my past actions, I apologize to all I have offended at any point in my life and throughout my journey.”
She further continued:
“I humbly ask for their forgiveness and, to honor their kindness and understanding, I promise I will commit to continuing to learn and listen, so as not to make the same mistakes in the future."
On her expectations of attending the Oscars, she said:
“I would have liked to experience it more normally, from the happiness of being nominated, of celebrating, as I am now, full of love, a person who puts her soul and her being into her work and who gives herself to others,”
She further added:
“I am very grateful to return and for how my colleagues and the professionals of the Hollywood industry received me. I am grateful to the academy, to Netflix and to the production.”
The actress also added, that the last months have been some of the darkest in her life. She also admitted to grappling with thoughts more troubling than what she has faced before.
"I harbored darker thoughts than those I considered in some of my previous, no less intimate and personal struggles. And I asked myself: if I, with all my strength and preparedness to deal with rage and rejection, am on the edge, what would have become of someone with fewer emotional resources to resist this onslaught?”
She notes that she went through something, many might not have survived, but she has come out of the ordeal with important lessons.
"Somehow, I made it. Others would not have survived this brutal winter I am about to wrap up. 'Now that the storm is calming down a bit, and the worst has passed (or so I hope), I start seeing clearly what I have learned." Gascón noted.
She also added:
"I’ve learned that hatred, like fire, cannot be put down with more hatred. Offenses cannot be erased with more offenses, and mistakes cannot clean up other mistakes, especially when lies and falseness proliferate all around and when all they send back to me is pure rage, blatant bullying, vexation, scorn, and even death threats."
Karla Sofia Gascón made a surprise appearance at the 97th Academy Awards last week
Karla Sofia Gascón made a surprise appearance at the Oscars last week, although she chose not to walk the red carpet.
First-time Oscar host, Conan O'Brien addressed the elephant in the room, by making joking references about past tweets, while Karla Sofia Gascón was present in the audience.
He said:
"I loved Anora. I really did. Anora uses the f word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist: ‘You tweeted WHAT.'"
He further added:
"Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight and Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel.” drawing laughs from the audience.
The backlash from the resurfaced tweets would force the Emila Perez actress to abruptly put a stop to her Oscar campaign, and later deactivate her (X formerly Twitter) account.
Emilia Perez received thirteen nominations at the 97th Academy Award, but won only two. Zoe Saldana took home the Award for Best Actress, while El Mal won the Best Orginal Song.
