Emilia Perez star Selena Gomez responded to the recent controversy surrounding her Oscar-nominated movie, Emilia Perez at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 9. The movie bagged 13 Oscar nominations before co-star Karla Sofia Gascon's old tweets resurfaced on the internet in late January. Gascon has been under fire for her controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd, and the diversity at the Oscars.
While reacting to the controversy and how it has affected the film's reputation, Selena Gomez said,
Some of the magic has disappeared. But I choose to continue to be proud of what I've done and I'm just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could."
"The director just really trusted me" - says Selena Gomez about working on Emilia Perez
Selena Gomez during an appearance at the Santa Barbara Film Festival opened up about how she feels about the film despite the controversy surrounding her co-star Karla Sofia Gascon. While mentioning that "some of the magic has disappeared", Gomez expressed gratitude to the film's director Jacques Audiard saying,
"The director just really trusted me and I was so grateful because I've gotten to show people that I am capable of foing more. I hope that this is just the beginning for me."
Jacques Audiard while speaking to Deadline in an article published on February 5, opened up about how he feels about Gascon's old posts resurfacing on the internet weeks after the film won nominations for the Oscars. He expressed displeasure for Karla's post overshadowing the film,
"Yes. Very unfortunately, it is taking up all the space, and that makes me very sad."
The director also mentioned that "what Karla Sofia said is inexcusable." When asked if Jacques has spoken to Karla ever since her tweets resurfaced, the director said he hasn't and he doesn't want to.
"I haven't spoken to her, and I don't want to. She's in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in, and I really don't understand why she's continuing."
The director said that Karla's actions has hurt the crew and all the people who worked on the movie including co-stars, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. He also mentioned that he's "not getting in touch with her because right now she needs space to reflect and take accountability for her actions."
