The stars definitely came out to celebrate Saturday Night Live’s 50th Anniversary special, which took place over the past weekend. Apart from those in attendance purely to take in the spectacle, several prominent faces across entertainment lent their skills to the various sketches and musical numbers. The list includes former alums Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, and Chris Rock; fan-favorite hosts like Tom Hanks and Pedro Pascal; and performers like Bad Bunny and more.
A standout moment from the festivities occurred when the audience was treated to an unexpected and absolutely wonderful duet from now Grammy-winning Sabrina Carpenter and music legend Paul Simon. Prior to their performance, they had a brief encounter in which their age gap was highlighted for the sake of comedy.
At the peak of the show, both performers walked on stage and began by giving an intro to their peer. Before kicking off their performance of Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound, the timeless Simon shared that he had last performed the song with The Beatles’ George Harrison on SNL in 1976. Sabrina jokingly responded,
"I was not born then and neither were my parents"
This did not faze Paul Simon who just stated,
“I’m glad they’re getting a chance to hear it tonight then.”
Once their performance drew to an end, the pair kicked off the special showcase by reciting SNL‘s catchphrase, “Live From New York, it’s Saturday night.”
Sabrina and SNL 50
Apart from her touching duet with Paul Simon to start the show, Sabrina was also seen later in the special as well, showing off her comedic chops. The Please, Please, Please singer was part of a sketch featuring Domingo, a recurring character played by SNL cast member Marcello Hernandez. In the skit, hilarity breaks out when Sabrina attends the less-than-one-year vow renewal celebration of her close friends Kelsey and Matt.
Thanks to the cast, it also purposely gives us a badly sung rendition of various songs such as Defying Gravity, You Belong With Me, and Espresso, which coincidentally was also featured in Domingo's first ever appearance on the storied sketch comedy show. A highlight of the song is when Pedro Pascal joined the fun to sing a verse of Carpenter's hit.
The skit also featured several unexpected guest appearances, starting with SNL legends Martin Short and Molly Shannon. If that wasn’t already enough to entice the audience, the skit also included Bad Bunny as Domingo's handsome brother Santiago and more recent alums from SNL’s incomparable run, Andy Samberg, Beck Bennett, and Kyle Mooney.
