How To Train Your Dragon: Its first official trailer dropped by Universal Pictures
The first official trailer of How To Train Your Dragon has just dropped, and it could not be more exciting.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dean DeBlois's directorial venture looks promising at first glance in the official trailer. It gives us an insight into the poignant journey it is going to engulf us in, as it begins with the voiceover of Gerard Butler's character Stoick the Vast, who, while making a call for action against the dragons, gives a context of the age-old rivalry between the two species.
The trailer follows with Hiccup, the son of Stoick the Vast, who is put to do what he is supposed to do, that is, to eliminate the dragons. But he fails to do so and proceeds to make his own set of realizations and approaches towards the historical conflict. The trailer gives us a glimpse of the beginning of a beautiful relationship of trust, love, and friendship between Hiccup and a dragon named Toothless.
Hiccup puts forward his own truth and perspective as he says:
"Maybe they are not as bad as we think they are"
The movie anticipates surrounding themes related to human-animal relationships, the power of empathy and love, and breaking regressive age-old traditions that are passed down to generations. As we see, his father Stoick the Vast, very strongly feels for the narrative of the Vikings and the dragons to be enemies, but his son Hiccup develops a sense of defiance.
Hiccup's character, who may initially appear as meek and timid in How To Train Your Dragon, is symbolic of soft power, dissent, and change. How he navigates his way into bringing in change is what we shall be set to witness in the movie, and it shall be interesting to see how the animated film takes its form into a live-action.
Hiccup's relationship with Toothless the Dragon is adorable as well as touching to witness in the trailer, as it slowly builds on the basis of trust and compassion.
Hiccup's character development is compelling as he is seen confronting his father questioning the oppressive system, in this heated exchange that we witness in the trailer:
Stoick The Vast: "They've killed hundreds of us!"
Hiccup: "And we've killed thousands of them!"
Hiccup's character is portrayed by Mason Thames, who starred in Black Phone (2021). Joining Gerard Butler and Mason Thames, we have Nico Parker essaying the role of Astrid, who has previously worked in films and series including Dumbo (2019), The Last of Us (2023), and Suncoast (2024).
We also have Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, and many others joining the cast as well.
