David Muir is one of the most respected figures in journalism and continues to make his mark as the anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Muir has now secured a place on TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list.
David Muir is one of prime-time television’s most recognizable names, and he has had a two-decade career at ABC News. Muir’s role at ABC extends far beyond reading the evening headlines.
Apart from anchoring World News Tonight since 2014, he also co-hosts the long-running investigative program 20/20 with Deborah Roberts and serves as ABC News’ lead anchor for breaking news and special event coverage, a role he assumed from George Stephanopoulos in 2021.
Celebrity Net Worth reported that David Muir earns approximately $8 million annually from his different jobs at the news channel.
His estimated net worth in 2025 is $25 million, which has been earned throughout his long journalistic career, through a number of broadcasting stints and selective public appearances.
After David Muir was included in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list, his fellow ABC anchor Robin Roberts shared the news on Good Morning America and congratulated him, as did his colleagues Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos. Diane Sawyer, who preceded Muir as the anchor of World News Tonight, congratulated him on being "calm, respectful, and fearless."
"I am lucky that my successor is also the irreverent friend I want to hang out with when the camera shuts down," She added.
A look into David Muir’s journey as a journalist
Muir first showed interest in journalism as a teenager, studying the field at Ithaca College, where he graduated magna cum laude in journalism (Celebrity Net Worth).
His career started formally at WTVH-TV in his hometown of Syracuse, New York, but he was then off to WCVB-TV in Boston, where he became known for investigative reporting. Muir came to prominence as a correspondent from Israel during the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
He was recruited to ABC News in 2003, where he has reported from many of the major geopolitical flashpoints around the world — war zones in the Middle East, catastrophe zones such as New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, and politically fraught localities in places like Ukraine.
He has also filed important reports from Iran before the nuclear negotiations and from Mogadishu, Somalia, at the height of the famine crisis. His on-the-ground reporting has won multiple awards, including Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a CINE Golden Eagle.
