Zoe Saldaña has become a household name thanks to her recurring roles as Gamora in the MCU and Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. Film buffs understand her career has incorporated several other nuanced and complex turns on the big screen, the sum of which has contributed towards her status as one of the most versatile and active actresses of her generation.

Saldaña received the biggest nod of her career to date when she was nominated for her first ever Academy Award for her supporting role in Emilia Pérez. Earlier today, she managed to take home her first Oscar, and gave a truly powerful and heartfelt acceptance speech upon winning.

With the win, Zoe also proudly became the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and focused her words on her family’s role in her success as she graciously accepted her newfound accolade.

“My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hard-working hands, and I’m the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope! The fact that I’m getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish — my grandmother if she were here would be so delighted. This is for my grandmother!”

Zoe Saldana's growing list of accolades

Apart from Saldaña’s first Oscar nomination and subsequent win for Emilia Pérez, she has had her fair share of recognition for her work on screen. Though the film was shrouded in controversy as of late due to the remarks of one of its cast members, Saldaña’s performance led to a nomination and win at the recent Golden Globes as well.

While her portrayal in the film was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA awards, the Critics' Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Saldaña did not manage to prevail with the top prize on those occasions. Her work on the film however earned her Best Actress alongside the film's female cast at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Saldaña has provided film goers with several memorable roles in her career. She had not won a ‘prestige’ award at that point, but had been nominated for her work in Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek at a string of other award shows.
