Jaime King is speaking out for the first time since her estranged husband was granted full custody of their two sons.
During the newest episode of Whine Down with Jana Kramer, Jaime King, 45, reflected on her ongoing custody battle for her children, whom she shares with ex-husband Kyle Newman.
The Black Summer actress voiced her fears about losing custody of sons James, 11, and Leo, 9. The White Chicks star's first son was born in October 2013, while her younger son was born in July 2015.
Everything we know about Jaime King's custody woes as star is forced to undergo six-month drug/alcohol program:
Speaking with Kramer, 41, during the episode, Jaime King said:
"My duty as a mother is to protect my children. And that's all that matters to me. This is scary." She added, "I just didn't know when I got married at a young age. I just didn't know that that the world works like this. I didn't know that legal systems work like this."
She continued, alluding to her marriage to Newman, whom she wed in 2007 but divorced in 2023,
"And not to sound like some kind of neophyte, but I thought that, you know, when you choose to love someone, then you love that person. You build a family with them, and, you trust them."
The One Tree Hill star resonated with her before chiming in with her own experiences:
"I agree with you on the legal system," she said. "I've been in abusive relationships in the past and, you know, even from the comments to the system, it's very messed up, and what they do to women and how they can turn it on us is mind-blowing."
Jaime King further revealed that she previously chose to maintain her silence on the matter out of concern for her children's privacy. She also claimed that her former husband deliberately misinterpreted the stories of their early days of dating to be granted custody.
"I've never had to think about myself as sober or not sober. I stopped using drugs at 17 or something," said King. “It’s terrifying, when to be able to be free means that you have to pay a very extreme price, and I’m not just talking about financially,” she said. “It’s very upsetting, and I will do everything in my power to change this system, and it’s not a will. I’m going to. There’s no price to pay for freedom.”
In March 2025, a judge ruled that while Newman is solely in charge of custody, King is permitted to see them three times a week, People Magazine has reported. She is also required to have supervised visitation as she has yet to complete a six-month drug/alcohol program, in addition to being tested weekly, aftercare, and a two-step program.

Furthermore, as reported by People Magazine, Jaime King is also mandated to attend a 26-week parenting program, individual counseling, and conjoint counseling with minors, the latter of which is when the minors' therapist deems it appropriate.
Newman filed for sole custody back in October 2024, when he accused his ex-wife of being "strung out" and "drunk" while caring for their sons. The pair filed for divorce back in 2020 after being wed for over 13 years, though they settled it in 2023. Just last month, King was evicted from her LA home for owing over $42,000 in back rent, Page Six reported.
