Sixteen Candles is Anthony Michael Hall & John Hughes' first movie together
The 1980s was a period of Brat Pack films and a popular actor known for presenting geeky roles is Anthony Michael Hall. His acting career witnessed a notable transition after his first movie with Hughes, Sixteen Candles. Talking about playing similar roles of an awkward geek, he said:
"I didn’t plan on being typecast — I don’t even think it was John’s intention."
As a 17-year-old teen, Hall did "a handful of films" before working with John. While working on similar nerd-like characters, he was simply coming from a pure place. Initially, he did not understand getting typecast. However, it took him a long time to move over those young geek roles and explore more evolving characters.
Hall appeared in two 1985 movies by Hughes
After Sixteen Candles was released in 1984, Anthony and John worked on two more hit films, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. These Hughes classics reflected the then-young actor's bract pack era and paved the way for glory in his career.
Anthony Michael Hall expressed his gratitude for John and shared how he learned and experienced a lot while filming with the director. He credited Hughes for his professional growth as well.
"I think long before the pressures of any of that, I learned so much just by working with John Hughes and the gifts that he gave me. I would not be here without him," the actor said.
Hall further continued:
"There was this sense of joy and freedom there as a kid,"
Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science impacted his showbiz career phenomenally. In addition to working with someone as acclaimed and influential as Hughes, Hall also got the golden opportunity to share the screen with famous actors.
One of the biggest influences of these three films is the actor's representation in the brat pack and that iconic era.
