Rapper Young Thug, known offstage as Jeffery Lamar Williams, walked free from jail Thursday evening after entering a guilty plea to charges of gang activity, drug offenses, and firearm possession. This marked a dramatic resolution to Georgia's longest-ever criminal trial.

The 33-year-old Grammy-winning artist had been behind bars for over 900 days following his 2022 arrest on charges tied to racketeering and gang affiliations.

Prosecutors asserted that his record label, established in Atlanta, functioned as a front for a criminal organization alleged to be responsible for up to 80% of the city’s violent crime.

On Thursday, Young Thug received a sentence that included time already served and 15 years of probation, with his release recorded later that same evening.

Judge Whitaker also mandated that he complete 100 hours of community service, avoid any association with gang members or former co-defendants, and refrain from entering the greater Atlanta area for the first 10 years of his 15-year probation, except in specific situations.

These exceptions include attending weddings, and funerals, and hosting quarterly presentations focused on anti-gang and anti-gun education.

What charges did Young Thug plead guilty to?

Young Thug admitted guilt to various charges, including one related to gang involvement, three related to drugs, and two firearm offenses. He also entered a no-contest plea on accusations of leading a gang and conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

Initially, prosecutors had pushed for a significant 45-year sentence, including 25 years in prison and 20 on probation. However, Young Thug’s plea agreement led to a reduced sentence. Judge Paige Whitaker ultimately sentenced him to time served, granting him release with 15 years of probation.

In a statement to the court, Young Thug expressed regret and accepted responsibility, saying:

I take full responsibility for my crimes... To really everybody that has got something to do with this situation, I want to say sorry

In his 5 minute speech, Young Thug continued explaining how he was a good guy who often found himself in trouble. He said:

"And I understand that you can't be that way when you reach a certain height because it could end bad... and it could fall on you."

When did Young Thug's legal troubles start?

On May 9, 2022, Young Thug was arrested in a big investigation into suspected gang activity under Georgia’s RICO law. Authorities accused him of helping start a violent gang called Young Slime Life. After two rounds of charges in May and August 2022, he faced accusations involving racketeering, drugs, and guns.

Jury selection for his trial started in January 2023, but the actual trial began 10 months later after multiple delays. Judge Whitaker took over the case after Judge Ural Glanville was removed in July, and Judge Shakura L. Ingram stepped down shortly after.

Initially, Young Thug pleaded not guilty, insisting he was innocent. Since the charges in 2022, several other defendants, including rapper Gunna, have accepted plea deals.
