One of the most talked about celebrity romances of 2018 was the brief affair between Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson. The romance between Grande and Davidson started unusually. They reconnected in May 2018-shortly after Ariana Grande ended her two-year engagement with rapper Mac Miller and Pete Davidson separated from long-term girlfriend Cazzie David despite having originally met in 2016 when Grande hosted Saturday Night Live.

They clicked right away. They began dating in public within weeks, and by early June, they were engaged. In an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Pete Davidson declared,

“I feel like I won a contest.”

confirming the engagement. Equally enamored, grande frequently shared posts about him on social media, even devoting a song to her Sweetener album called Pete Davidson.

Pete Davidson even had many ink pieces made in honor of Grande, including the number "8418" (a reference to Grande's father's fire department) on his foot and her trademark bunny ears mask behind his ear.

They were firmly established as the most attractive couple in pop culture thanks to their public appearances, which included a high-profile date at Disneyland and their red carpet debut at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. Davidson often made jokes about his relationship, as seen by his frank and self-deprecating humor. He reportdely told GQ,

“I just moved into a place with her, and I’m like, ‘Am I the luckiest dude alive?’”

But just as swiftly as their affection had blossomed, it soon encountered formidable obstacles. Mac Miller sadly died from an accidental overdose in September 2018, only a few months after Grande and Davidson were engaged. Grande, who had stayed close to Miller even after their divorce, was crushed by the news. After Miller's death, Davidson subsequently said that he knew that their relationship would end.

“I pretty much knew it was over after that. That was really horrible, and I can’t imagine what that was like. I was like, ‘I’ll be here as long as you need me to be.’”

he stated in an interview with Charlamagne tha God in 2020.

Overwhelmed by her loss, Grande distanced herself from the public, and the engagement was formally canceled in October 2018.

“It was way too much too soon. It’s not shocking to anyone.”

a source told PEOPLE.

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande both advanced in their careers despite the sudden breakup of their engagement. Grande used music as a way to express her feelings, most notably by referring to Davidson in her popular song Thank U, Next, singing, “Even almost got married, and for Pete, I’m so thankful.”

In the meantime, Davidson kept on with his acting and comic career, frequently making amusing comments about his life. On an SNL episode, he joked about his relationship

“I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is, sometimes things just don’t work out. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”
