Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have brought an end to their marriage, People Magazine has reported. The two signed the papers on December 30, over eight years after the actress initiated the same in the Los Angeles Superior Court. Their lawyer confirmed the settlement in an official statement to CNN.

Pitt and Jolie got married in 2014, and their marriage lasted about two years before the latter filed for divorce in 2016, citing "irreconcilable differences." Later, though, she accused Pitt of being abusive towards her and their shared six children. However, as per BBC, a police investigation found him to be in the clear, and he has categorically maintained his innocence.

Everything to know as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt un-tie the knot

In the official statement to CNN, Angelina Jolie’s lawyer James Simon of Hersh Mannis said:

"More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."

Before tying the knot, one of Hollywood's most prolific couples, Angelina Jolie, 49, and Brad Pitt, 61, had dated for a decade, even welcoming their six kids during that time. Now, the two are far from cordial, with California family lawyer Scott Weston calling the events that unfolded “probably the most congested superior court in the country," per People Magazine.

Furthermore, the outlet claims that upon filing for divorce eight years ago, Jolie asked for physical custody of their adopted and biological children: Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18 and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. All of the children were minors at the time.

Per the outlet, Angelina Jolie issued a statement defending her actions, claiming it was “for the health of the family,” though she agreed to give Pitt visitation rights and joint legal custody. Their marriage would go on to be dissolved only in 2019.

“It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing,” she said. “They are six very brave, very strong young people.”

Several sources attribute their falling out to an incident that took place in August 2016, when the family was aboard a private jet. They were US-bound at the time, having flown in from France. A heavily redacted report obtained by CNN states Angelina Jolie's accusations against her estranged husband, claiming he physically assaulted her and verbally abused their kids while they were aboard the jet.
