All about the bond between John Elway and Jeff Sperbeck
After becoming John Elway’s sports agent and business manager in the early ‘90s, Sperbeck played an keyrole in managing Elway’s marketing, business activities, and contract negotiations throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career and well into his retirement.
According to a report in Pro Football History, Elway was born on June 28, 1960, in Port Angeles, Washington. His father, Jack, was the football coach at Port Angeles High School. He had been a quarterback in his school as well, and so, Elway decided to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Football became his passion, and in the 1981 MLB draft, the New York Yankees selected John Elway in the second round. After Elway’s playing career ended in 1998, Jeff and John remained close and expanded their collaboration into business ventures.
TMZ noted that they started a winery together, 7Cellars, in 2013. Jeff Sperbeck is currently the CEO and Founding Partner of the company. He previously worked at Octagon as a Director. Jeff Sperbeck attended California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, per his LinkedIn profile.
It also stated that Sperbeck received his NFL Certified Contract Advisor license from the National Football League in February 1994. Besides Elway, Sperbeck represented over 100 NFL players throughout his 30-year career as a football agent and a business advisor.
The 7Cellars website described Sperbeck’s contribution in Elway’s life. It mentioned that,
“In 1990 Sperbeck became the manager of John Elway’s marketing and business activities and has been involved in a multitude of Elway’s and other athletes’ businesses, as an advisor, partner and, or investor.”
So, how did 7Cellars come into being? Its website stated that after the success of his restaurants, John wanted to create a wine that lived up to his ideals and proudly represented his family. “They partnered with iconic winemaker Rob Mondavi, Jr. to release the company’s first vintage of Reserve wines -with a 2013 Cabernet,” per the description on the company’s LinkedIn site.
The relationship between Elway and Sperbeck isn’t a typical agent-client dynamic, but speaks volumes about their bond as friends and business partners over the years.
