Along with winning five Grammy Awards in 2025, Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us seems to be a life-saving piece of work. On February 4, 2025, the American Heart Association shared an Instagram post mentioning that the track has 101 beats per minute which can be beneficial for a hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The Instagram post mentioned:
“Mustard on the beat. And it could help you save a life with Hands-Only CPR. If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the rhythm of “Not Like Us.””
American Heart Association’s CPR instructor, Mike Smith, while speaking with CBS Mornings on February 4, 2025, said hands-only CPR almost triples the chances of survival.
The rate of this CPR is about 100 to 120 beats per minute. In addition to Not Like Us, other songs with the right beats for this CPR are Stayin’ Alive, Poker Face, and Uptown Funk.
To perform hands-only CPR, one needs to take the heel of one hand right in the center of the chest, with the other hand on top to interlock the finger. Then, they should push down two inches at the rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute while thinking about the song.
At this point, they can start with the compressions. CPR must be performed only when the person is not breathing, and if they are, waiting for help is the best option.
DJ Mustard was surprised to see the impact Not Like Us created
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on the Grammy red carpet, DJ Mustard said the love that Not Like Us received was unexplainable.
“I don’t even know how to feel that these moments, I am just trying to live through it. I didn’t write no accepted speech today when we won, I was just going off the top, felt like a rapper a little bit how I was up there.”
When Not Like Us came through, he thought it was just ‘crazy.’ However, he felt he was not entitled to anything and he said he wanted to wait and see what happened and let God guide him through.
Mustard feels Kendrick Lamar would bring a ‘monster show’ at his Super Bowl halftime performance. He considered Lamar as one of the greatest artists and performers of all time.
During an interview with Billboard in 2024, the record producer said he was shocked to see the lyrics of Not Like Us. At that time, he didn’t even understand the impact the song would create.
Concerning CPR, Mike Smith mentioned that the first point that one should note in case of an emergency is that the scene is safe to enter. If not, one should call 911 for professional first responders to take over. After entering the scene, one must ensure that the person is unresponsive. If they do not respond, calling for help is ideal.
The 911 dispatcher can help one guide through the steps of CPR. After that, one needs to check for breathing for five to ten seconds to look out for the rise and fall of the person’s chest.
