Charles Shyer, an Oscar-nominated writer and director known for making movies like Father of the Bride and Baby Boom has passed away at the age of 83. The director died on 27 December 2024 and the cause of death is yet to be revealed.
Charles Shyer’s career gained recognition thanks to his collaboration with Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller on the screenplay for Private Benjamin (1980). The film, directed by Howard Zieff, featured Goldie Hawn in her breakout big-screen role.
Following their creative success, Shyer and Meyers got married in the same year, subsequently becoming one of Hollywood’s most successful husband-and-wife duo for the next 20 years. The two gained popularity through their relationship comedies that struck close to home for the audiences, per Yahoo Entertainment.
Though they both got together in 1980, the initial meeting between Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers took place in 1976, forged through their mutual connection with the writer-producer Harvey Miller.
At the time, Shyer was a well-established writer, who had worked on an early television version of The Odd Couple and films such as Smokey and the Bandit.
According to Britannica, Meyers, who was new to the business at that time, had just made her decision to pursue screenwriting after leaving her old job in public relations.
The couple co-wrote and directed hit films like Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Baby Boom (1987), and the 1991 version of Father of the Bride. Despite their divorce in 1999, their last official collaboration was the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, which was Meyers’ directorial debut.
The couple together welcomed two daughters, Annie Meyers-Shyer in July 1980, followed by Hallie in July 1987.
A look into Charles Shyer's career after his separation from Nancy Meyers
Charles Shyer worked on The Affair of the Necklace (2001), a historical drama starring Hilary Swank, after splitting from Nancy Meyers. The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
Later Charles Shyer directed Alfie, a remake of the 1966 classic starring Jude Law, in 2004, but the movie flopped, pulling in just $35 million on a $60 million budget.
After this setback, Shyer took a turn away from directing until his comeback with The Noel Diary in 2022, a Christmas romantic comedy he co-wrote alongside Rebecca Connor and David Golden.
Shyer and Meyers went on to make Home Again (2017), the first film directed by their daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer. Hallie directed the movie while Meyers was the producer and Shyer was the second unit director.
