Cher and Sonny Bono were married for 11 years from 1964 to 1975. In her new autobiography, Cher: The Memoir: Part One, the singer opened up about her relationship with Sonny, who was 11 years older than her, and that he had hired private detectives to tail her after she left him for a guitarist named Bill.

The two first crossed paths in 1963 when the singer was 16 and Sonny was 27 and married. It started out as a platonic friendship, and Sonny was first interested in the singer's friend. She then began living with Sonny and had a faux "marriage ceremony" in 1964 before officially tying the knot in 1969 and having their first child, Chastity Bono.

The two had also started a lounge act called The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which was the key to staying married despite having troubles. At the time, Sonny was found being unfaithful to the singer and had also remarked once, "One woman, or even five, was not enough for him. However, the singer was also involved with a guitarist named Bill from their band, which she disclosed to Sonny in 1972.

Sonny went to file for separation in February 1974, and the singer continued to be involved with Bill.

"There was no way he was going to let me go off on my own," says Cher

While talking about her separation from Sonny and what led her to leaving him, Cher, in her new memoir, revealed,

"Ever since we'd first started living together, he'd been secretly convinced I'd leave him one day.

She also mentioned that while they were working on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in the 1970s, she took to a guitarist named Bill and once told Bono that she wanted to sleep with him. She then left Bono, packed a bag, and went to hide in her friends Paulette and Ridgeway's room, where Bill was, and "begged" them to go with him to the airport.

The singer also mentioned that she found out that Bono had slept with Bill's girlfriend the night before out of "revenge," and upon finding the information out, she asked the guitarist to go to San Francisco with her with the money Bono gave her. The two took two separate cars for privacy reasons, and the singer found that Bono had hired private detectives to follow them.

"There was no way he was going to let me go off on my own.'

The two ended up at a hotel at 4 a.m. and checked into separate rooms, and the private detectives found the singer the morning after.

Cher's two-part memoir project, confirmed in July, traces her life from childhood to her rise to fame and her complicated relationship with Bono.
