Chappell Roan, aka Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, bagged the “Best New Artist” accolade at the 67th Grammy Awards.

Soon after she was announced as the winner, Roan walked up to the stage to accept the award and read her acceptance speech from her notebook. With her speech, the Good Luck, Babe! singer also addressed music labels and raised some key issues while taking a stance for all the artists. Chappell Roan started by displaying her gratitude,

“Thank you to my fellow nominees, whose music got me through this past year — Brat was the best night of my life this year."

She further added,

"Thank you all who listened to get me here today, and Dan, and Island Records, Amusement Records, my friends and my family, and above all my papa Chappell, who I named myself after.”

After thanking everyone, she continued to talk about the issues related to healthcare and wages that artists face. She shared her experience to point out the difficulties many artists have faced without receiving much support from the system. A handful of netizens were not happy after Roan's win, as they voiced their opinion on X. A user felt Sabrina Carpenter, who was also nominated in the same category, was more deserving,

“SABRINA CARPENTER WAS ROBBED”

Another user displayed their disappointment after Doechii didn't win the award,

"Ok but Doechii!!!"

Someone also added,

"She deserved but I would love to see doechii winning in this category"

Another one noted that Carpenter avoided the “Best New Artist Curse,” referencing the belief that many winners in the category usually face failure in their respective careers.

“Sabrina escaped the best new artist curse.”

However, a user pointed out how Chappell Roan was more deserving than Sabrina,

“Sabrina has been making albums for a few years….maybe best new artist of 2022 but not this year lol.”

Some users also praised Roan for her speech.

“WHAT A DAMN SPEECH,” a user lauded Roan.

As mentioned earlier, Chappell Roan took a stand for her fellow artists with her acceptance speech. She read from her notebook,

“I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage and healthcare, especially for developing artists [Applause from the crowd].”

Roan shared her personal experience,

“I got signed so young … and when I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt, and like most people, I had a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic, and could not afford health insurance. It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and to feel so betrayed by the system and to be so dehumanized to not have healthcare. If my label would have prioritized artists’ health, I could have been provided care by a company I was giving everything to.”

She concluded by saying,

“So, record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees, with a livable wage and health insurance and protection. Labels, we got you — but do you got us?”

Apart from Roan, the other nominees in the category included Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, Raye, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims. Carpenter won two Grammys in the Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance categories. At the same time, Doechii claimed a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category for her Alligator Bites Never Heal album.
