In an interview released by NOLA.com on January 30, Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez revealed why she thinks Kendrick Lamar is the "right person" to perform at the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in New Orleans next month. While discussing what led to the decision to have Lamar perform at the show, Perez noted,
"He's had an incredible year, very deserving of the attention. The Grammys also acknowledged that. That's part of the consideration for the halftime show. Kendrick's richness and culture is really a nod to New Orleans."
She also went on to add,
"I didn't choose the artist, but I do believe that definitely there was consideration. Kendrick is the right person for the show at this moment."
2024 was Kendrick Lamar's year, with the artist being named the rap MVP for 2024 by popular media outlet NFR Podcast. The Compton artist also topped Billboard charts with his diss tracks and hip-hop songs. Lamar was the first and only artist to have three No. 1 records in 2024.
Roc Nation is owned by Jay-Z, who also has a say in choosing a performer for the Halftime show. As per Perez, Jay-Z presents a shortlist of possible halftime show performers,
"He comes back with ideas. It really starts with his thinking. It's easier for him. It's almost like a chef picking the specials for the evening."
Kendrick Lamar to bring SZA for his Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show
Kendrick Lamar recently posted a promotional clip on his social media account where he is featured chatting on his cell on a football field while mentioning that he has plans to bring another artist for his Apple Music Super Bowl performance. Lamar is heard saying,
"I've been thinking about a guest performer."
He then gets cut off by SZA, who spills a cool blue drink onto him in slow motion. SZA and Lamar have seemingly developed a closeness, with SZA showing up on two of Lamar's songs, Gloria and Luther, in his album GNX.
The pair's upcoming 2025 Grand National Tour is scheduled to kick off in Minnesota on April 19 and includes 19 dates with stops in Atlanta, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Detroit, and Los Angeles.
Lamar will be the first-ever Solo Rap Artist to headline a Super Bowl. The Super Bowl LIX will occur at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025.
