President Biden revealed on Thursday that the Federal government will be picking up the entire tab of the LA wildfire disaster response. Speaking from the White House at the time, he added that this would include the first responders' salaries, clearing debris, setting up makeshift shelters, and more.
A video of President Biden issuing the statement has been doing the rounds online, and as usual, netizens were quick to swoop in and make fun. Some began joking that he is trying to put the government in as much debt as he can before he leaves office. Here's what the comment says:
"Ohhh he running that tab up before he leave that office!!!"

"California having this type of disaster affects the whole world! Some of you will complain about anything. He’s done a hell of a lot while president. When we have a disaster we get aid and relief from other countries. Normally Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Portugal for decades have helped. This isn’t just a rich thing there are “everyday” people being hit as well. The lack of compassion and empathy is disturbing," someone pointed out.
While some users kept fooling around and cracking jokes, others pointed out the direness of the situation, noting that this wasn't the right time to poke fun.
President Biden says the impact of the situation is "big, big, big"
As reported by ABC News, President Biden sat down with federal officials at the White House, where he revealed that the funds should cover all expenses for the next 180 days. "I told the governor and local officials, spare no expense," he said, referring to the damage as "catastrophic."
Speaking directly to those impacted by the fires, he said:
"We are with you. We are not going anywhere. To the firefighters and first responders, you are heroes. The cost of the debris cleanup is gigantic, gigantic. The cost of replacing the housing is almost exponential," he added. "Anybody can give you a number now, they have no idea what they're talking about. It's big, big, big."
He added:
"I'm going to make an appeal right now to the United States Congress. They're going to have to step up when we ask for more help to get people the kind of – they need, to get the kind of help they need. Because it really does matter."
While Biden was speaking, the Golden State was playing host to five ravaging fires. According to ABC News, about 28,000 acres had been decimated while hundreds of thousands of people were pushed out of their homes. At least five lives have been claimed thus far, while countless others were left injured.
Vice President Kamala Harris, a California native, also spoke at the meeting, noting:
"What we have seen in California and in particular in Southern California is apocalyptic in terms of the nature of it."
This Wednesday, the President approved the major disaster declaration, which allowed all victims to "immediately access funds and resources to jumpstart their recovery," as per the White House. Biden also deployed all firefighting resources from the Pentagon to the area, including helicopters.
