More about Trump and Putin's friendship amidst Zelenskyy's tweet
Ukraine and Russia have been in war since 2014, amidst Ukraine's President Volodymyr's recent X post congratulating Donald on his Presidential win, Donald and Russia's Putin's friendship has been public since 2013.
In 2013, the President publicly praised Putin's leadership qualities calling him a "real leader" as compared to the then U.S President Barack Obama. During the 2016, U.S Presidency campaign, U.S intelligence agencies alleged that Putin interfered to support Donald although Putin denied these allegations and Donald defended him in interviews.
In 2018, despite sanctions calling out Russia's alleged election meddling, Donald remained reluctant to condemn Russia and he received backlash from critics claiming that Donald allowed Putin's influence to grow. While responding to Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the President praised Putin calling him "smart" and "genius." In 2022, Trump said,
"I'd say that's pretty smart. He's taking over a country - really a vast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in."
Zelenskyy is one of the leaders among many including Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, Hungary's Viktor Orban, France's Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Italy's Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who congratulated Donald on his victory.
