Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on January 10, slammed Apple, claiming that the innovation with the company has slowed down. Zuckerberg also criticized Apple's commission policy for developers on its App Store.
"On the one hand, (the iPhone has) been great, because now pretty much everyone in the world has a phone, and that's kind of what enables pretty amazing things. But on the other hand, they have used that platform to put in place a lot of rules that I think feel arbitrary and (I) feel like they haven't really invented anything great in a while."
Zuckerberg commented that after founder Steve Jobs' death, there has been no notable innovation.
"It's like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now they're just kind of sitting on it 20 years later."
After Mark Zuckerberg's comments on Apple went viral, netizens took to social media to criticize the Meta owner, allegedly noting that his company copied features from Snapchat and TikTok.
Users also took to social media to criticize Meta's innovations, while others agreed with Mark.
"As opposed to Facebook which gets exponentially worse every single update since its inception" - a user commented
"I still don’t get why they asking him an opinion on a phone company. His phone failed miserably. What would he know about phones and innovation? He tried to get into that market and consumers shut him down instantly." - another user said
"he’s completely right. apple hasn’t brought us anything new. i’m ready for the z phone like in hannah montana" - a user stated
"the only good thing they released recently was the mac mini" - another user noted
Has Mark Zuckerberg's Meta copied from others?
Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, home to Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads, has been known to copy features from other notable social media channels such as X, Snapchat, and TikTok.
In 2016, Facebook launched the "Stories" feature on Instagram, first introduced by Snapchat. Instagram launched its Reels feature in 2020, a copy from TikTok. WhatsApp's editing features, which allow users to edit a message up to 15 minutes after being sent, were introduced by rivals - Telegram and Signal.
Meta's Threads feature, launched in July 2023, is also a copy of X, aka Twitter. In his first post on the new app, Mark Zuckerberg noted that he envisions the app to reach over a billion users, noting that Twitter has not achieved this number yet. Zuckerberg added, "Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn't nailed it."
