Shortly after Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Apple Music interview came out, Joe Budden took to his own podcast to claim that it fell short of his expectations.
During the segment, Budden claimed that Kendrick played the interview too "safe" and "corporate," adding that he wanted the "unsafe Black interview." He also claimed that Kendrick was "too big" to do such a thing, and that he would love to talk with the artist behind closed doors with no cameras.
Joe Budden's comments have since drawn varied reactions on social media, with some users defending Kendrick Lamar's interview. Check out what an X user said:
"Kendrick never been messy and I love that about him. He let the art speak either you catch it or you don’t."
Scores online users joined the discourse in the comments section to share their opinion:
"Why do they have to talk about the truth behind closed doors? The way these guys act like they’re always walking on thin ice when they have their own platforms blows me," one user stated.
"Kendrick should not be messy. That’s the entire point he was making about Drake. He not Drake. I handle my biz on wax. Not on Twitter or the internet," someone else pointed out.
"You not gonna get that on an Apple Music interview," yet another user wrote.
"I laugh at the way they constantly talk about fan entitlement and then get on the pod acting like entitled fans lmao now with that said… Naaaah ni**a you got what you got. Man barely said a word all year, just be happy with that. He don’t owe you sh*t," a user posted on X.
Many more users had a lot to say:
"He literally explained that he likes to be on the moment and doesn’t look in the past. This post seems messy," one user noted.
"It was a corporate interview mandated by SB committee.. it wasn’t Kendrick sitting down in an interview he chose, I’m not shocked he didn’t do that," another stated.
"It was a great interview. No one cares about Drake. I enjoyed hearing and learning about the man himself. Call it maturity I guess," someone else chimed in.
"I remember after the pop out n*ghas said Kendrick was dragging the beef…. Now they mad at him for not dragging he beef 8 MONTHS LATER….. can’t win," a fan pointed out.
Fans online swarmed to Kendrick's defense, with many noting that perhaps it was time to put his beef with Drake to rest.
Joe Budden calls on Kendrick Lamar to drop his guards and give an "unsafe Black response"
Speaking on his segment, Joe Budden said that he would “probably never want to see a Kendrick Lamar interview again.” According to Hot New Hip Hop, he also credited Ebro Darden and Nadeska Alexis for the way they handled the "safe Black interview." Directing his criticism towards Lamar, Budden said:
"I want the unsafe Black interview, but we wouldn't get unsafe Black responses, because he's too big," Budden said. "I wanna talk to him in a private room, behind closed doors, no cameras, where we can get the truth about some things. not all of this bullsh*t, 'yeah man, Not Like Us was a diss but it was just a fantastic record overall, it was hittin', I think the community really got together around the synths.' Ni**a, tell the truth."
He added that Lamar should have spiced up the interview and his feelings about Drake. Joe Budden also claimed that Kendrick Lamar is definitely "messy," claiming that his diss track just proved it.
Kendrick Lamar performed at the Superbowl LIX 2025, where he delivered the live rendition of Not Like Us, with Drake's reported ex, Serena Williams, bopping to it on-stage. He also performed alongside SZA and DJ Mustard.
