Rapper Kid Cudi opened up about his wish to collaborate with fellow hip-hop star J Cole, revealing that the rapper had passed on several opportunities to do so. Cudi responded to a fan's query about the possibility of the two joining forces during a Q&A session on X, to which the rapper replied:
"I had a session w Cole for Indicud he couldnt write to the beat I produced. It was a bummer, and I always wanted to do something so I reached out for INSANO, no response. So theres that."
When a follow-up to the original tweet emerged, the rapper responded:
"Yea for sure I dont think Cole dislikes me I think he just didnt connect w what I sent him. One day hopefully it happens."
Regardless, the internet took notice, and in no time, there was a whirlwind of ridicule surrounding the rapper. Many poked fun at him, claiming that perhaps J Cole was just not a fan of Kid Cudi. "He just didn’t want to do it," one user joked.
Fans call for a J Cole and Kid Cudi collab, claiming an "in-person" convo would help
Several others said things along the same vein, noting that perhaps it just wasn't meant to be, while others pleaded with J Cole to try and make it happen anyway.
"why are u always so sensitive about these rappers. last time about gambino now cole. cmon bro u better than this," one user noted.
"We need a collab baddd bro, something for the fall off?," one user requested.
"damn shame tbh, insano was really good already but a song with you and j cole would have made it even better imo," another user noted.
Requests for a collab kept mounting anyway, despite Kid Cudi pointing out the creative differences between the two.
"then do a remix an to older song have him feature of verse "old" is always New to someone," one user suggested.
"I love Indicud! That would've been a dope collab if Cole was on there. Hope yall connect in the future. Your comment will probably spark it," another declared.
"Nothing an in person convo can’t fix," another user advised.
Notably, the masses online seemingly accepted that a collab just wasn't in the books for now, and instead resorted to suggesting other possibilities, such as Imagine Dragons, Lil Wayne, and Kendrick Lamar.
There doesn't appear to be any bad blood between the two, as Cole even gave a shoutout to Kid Cudi in his track, Day ‘N’ Nite (nightmare). Cudi was also slated to perform on Cole's INSANO WORLD TOUR before things went awry for him and he had to take it easy with a broken foot. He sustained the injury in April after jumping off the stage during his performance at Coachella.
In the past, J Cole has been known to "ghost" other rappers as well. Rich The Kid told the Drink Champs podcast with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN that the rapper once ignored him after the two had spoken about a possible session in the studio.
Kid Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, is infamous for dismissing collabs himself. In February 2024, he proclaimed that he wasn't interested in collaborating with Childish Gambino. When fans started speculating about possible beef between them, Gambino intervened. In an IG Live, he let the masses know that there was no bad blood between the two, nor did he have time for it.
