CNN's Jake Tapper sat down for an interview on The Lead with Kara Swisher, where, the two tried to decode the meaning behind Elon Musk's latest screen name on X.
Earlier this week, the billionaire mogul briefly changed his name to "Harry Bolz," and while Tapper called the move a "juvenile joke," Swisher theorized that he did so because he liked the power it brought. She also criticized him for being 12 years old "emotionally."
Users have since begun reacting to the segment, with some supporting the two. Others, however, felt like their theories may have been a reach and that the mogul was just playing around. Check out what one user said, for instance:
"Elon Musk fanatic Kara Swisher says Musk changed his name on X to "Harry Bolz" because he likes the power it brings. Harry Bolz = Power. Got it. CNN's Jake Tapper and Swisher did a deep dive into Musk's 'Harry Bolz.' Tapper promised his audience that he wasn't offended by the name; he just thought it was dumb. Swisher determined that Musk isn't happy about life but noted that he is crafty and strategic."
The comments didn't end there, as the masses online were ostensibly teeming with opinions:
"They can't understand that he was mocking them," someone theorized.
"Did Swisher say how she determined Elon is not happy about life? Weird," another pointed out.
"I’ve never seen a happier billionaire in all my life.. CNN simply can’t stand it," someone else claimed.
"What would we ever do without these hard-hitting pieces from legacy media?" another stated, sarcastically.
Even more weighed in:
"It wasn’t meant to offend anyone," someone else noted.
"This is great! Elon knows what he’s doing!!" another claimed.
"No silly he did so you guys would embarrasse yourselves by repeating it over and over on live tv," one other stated.
"Analyzing the name "Harry Bolz" as if it were a great mystery is exactly why the press sometimes loses credibility," yet another opined.
Users were visibly disappointed in CNN's latest segment, with some noting that there were more pressing matters to get to rather than a billionaire changing his name on X.
Kara Swisher says Musk may be "deeply insecure"
Kara Swisher, a tech journalist, dissected the meaning behind Elon Musk's name change on X, though, at one point, Tapper asked Swisher if any of the "tech billionaires are happy." She replied:
"I don't know, a couple of them. I think Tim Cook's happy. I don't know. Satya Nadella seems happy. I think the ones that act like adults are happy. Absolutely. But, you know, what Musk does it sort of - he's 53 years old now at this point, and he sort of engages in memes, dank names and stupid jokes and things like that." Kara Swisher went on, "So the ones that haven't progressed beyond, I don't know, 12-year-olds emotionally, I think have a problem. And so they have insecurity."
Elsewhere in the segment, Tapper referred to Musk's new handle as nothing but a "juvenile joke," noting that he's "not offended, it's just stupid." Kara Swisher echoed the sentiments, noting that for Musk, some of it might be "performative" or "deep insecurity," or that he simply "likes the power or he likes the attention," but underneath all of that, he was a very "strategic" individual.
Musk himself explained his temporary name change on Tuesday, noting that
“One of the things USAID was doing was offering free circumcisions throughout the world, but charging US taxpayers ridiculously high prices! I decided to compete for the business.”
