Singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, 26, made headlines when she sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone, stating that she would never collaborate with companies she feels are unethical, namely H&M. She said that such brands would never "serve her music." According to her:

"No, H&M does not fit in this world. Also, f*** H&M."

H&M and Charli XCX debuted their collaboration on Thursday, September 12, and many fans speculated that Roan was throwing shade at her fellow singer when she made the comments about turning H&M down. However, it may all be coincidental, as the interview reportedly took place before the announcement of the collab came out.

Chappell Roan seemingly disses Charli XCX, fans react with both support and ridicule

Chappell Roan told Rolling Stone how she had been paying heed to her friend Elton John's advice on saying "no" to whatever she feels is wrong.

“All the money goes to the world-building. That’s why I am saying no to every fucking brand deal right now (...) No amount of money is going to [make me] consider working with [anyone]. It has to be a hundred percent right.”

In speaking with British Vogue in August, Charli XCX reflected on how she feels about H&M clothes, saying:

"Those clothes gave me an ownership of who I was and what I wanted to project outwardly. In some cases, those clothes gave me confidence. That time was really formative for me.”

Yet, many took to X to highlight the apparent jab.

"THE CHARLI XCX SHADE??? BACK UP GIRL," one user exclaimed.
"The charli smack," one user joked.

However, fans were more interested in showing their support and appreciation for Roan's stance.

"Gotta respect that! Chappell Roan staying true to her vision instead of cashing in on every brand deal thrown her way. It's all about authenticity, and not every brand fits the vibe. Love seeing an artist prioritize their craft over a quick paycheck," one user appreciated.
"Chappell Roan's commitment to her brand's vision is impressive—sticking to what truly aligns with her values," another said.
"By rejecting brand deals that don't align with her creative world, she underscores her dedication to integrity over financial gain," another chimed in.

Overall, fans praised Roan for prioritizing integrity and staying true to her vision over profit.

Billie Eilish says the problem is to make sure clothes are being made "ethically" and "sustainably"

Chappell Roan is not the only one to call out the brand for its fast-fashion antics, as Billie Eilish has also voiced complaints in the past. The singer, who collaborated with Charli XCX on Guess, told Billboard in March 2024:

"It's about how it feels and how it looks and how it's made. And so the problem is to make sure that my clothing is being made well and ethically and with good materials and it's very sustainable and that it feels good and is durable."

In the music video for Guess, hundreds, if not thousands of undergarments were used. The duo donated about 10,000 units to victims of domestic violence.
