It's not just that watching Interstellar prompts us to ask new questions about science or existence every time we see it. The film gets better and better with every watch, even after a decade of its release. Matthew McConaughey, who plays Cooper in the Christopher Nolan film, feels the same.

At 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW), ScreenRant discussed with him a little bit about the movie. He was asked about his interactions with the movie's fans, especially those who've watched it many times, and here is what he has to say,

"People come up now that go, "Interstellar, that's my movie. It changed my life. Here's why." I say, "How many times have you seen it?" Most of them say four, so as you say, it does get better and people find the meaning more clear the more times you see it. That one sure as heck has legs, and it's gotten more important to a lot of people here 10 years later than what it's been."

The film was originally released in 2014, when it garnered $681 million globally in the initial theatrical run. Since then, it has been rereleased multiple times, and every time it did, theaters were filled with fans, as it is the first time Interstellar is releasing.

Considering all of its releases, the film has garnered $759 million at the time of writing. The 2024 rerelease raked in around $38 million, the highest amount among all of them.

Before the film was released globally, Matthew McConaughey sat down with the crew for an interview for ABC News. There he shared that his son Levi's love for space and related things served as "the main gut reason" for him to take on this role.

Matthew McConaughey's Cooper is a widower and a former NASA pilot in the film who now lives as a farmer. Eventually, he becomes a medium to save humanity, as the earth is dying due to crop blights and dust storms.

Like in real life, as the Interstellar actor explained to ABC, his on-screen relationship with Cooper's daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) is similar. They discuss a lot of science in the movie. The later versions of Murph are played by Jessica Chastain, who eventually solves an equation necessary to save the earth, thanks to Cooper.

The movie received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Sound Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. However, it only took home the Best Visual Effects prize.

Kip Thorne, who was the scientific consultant on the film, sat down with 30 people at Double Negative, the company behind the film's visual effects, to help them portray gravitational lensing accurately.
