During the 2025 Academy Awards, we saw the iconic Goldie Hawn speak about her experience with vision loss from cataracts.
While presenting an award with actor Andrew Garfield, the 79-year-old actress paused for a moment as she and Garfield introduced the winner and admitted that she couldn’t read the teleprompter, saying she was “completely blind” from cataracts.
Hawn’s lighthearted approach to the award ceremony took a serious turn while presenting the award for Best Animated Feature Film, during which she turned to Garfield and asked, “OK. Sweetheart, can you read that? I can't read that.” According to Yahoo News, Andrew Garfield dealt with the situation with class and swooped in to help her through the rest of the presentation.
Aside from her recent vision struggles, Goldie Hawn has been candid about other parts of her health, notably mental health. In 2003, she established the Goldie Hawn Foundation and its flagship program, MindUP.
The program works to improve children’s emotional and psychological well-being. Speaking about the need for early mental health education at a CNN Life Itself Conference 2022, she said:
"If one more child commits suicide… I can't take it. It's not possible in the United States of America. We have every opportunity to change the way we educate our children… They're not automatons, they are humans, and they come in everyday with stressors, with problems."
The non-profit organization has leveraged cutting-edge scientific research to create educational programs focused on boosting children’s social and emotional skills. They work with top specialists in neuroscience, education, and psychology to develop evidence-based programs.
Goldie Hawn went to express the importance of therapy and about the importance of providing better mental health care at a young age.
"We can't turn a blind eye anymore, at forty years old you can't just start meditating, you have to start when you're little, to know, 'This is my tool, and I am standing firm, and I have agency over my own belief system,' and it's okay that you think differently."
