Paul Mescal starrer Gladiator II is all set to hit digital screens after the film opened to mixed reviews. Acting as a sequel to 2000's hit film Gladiator, Mescal and Pedro Pascal's portrayal of Lucius and General Acacius were also met with mixed reactions.

The film was released in November 2024 and saw lukewarm success as it stayed in cinemas for a while. Following its worldwide release, Paramount Pictures has now added the film to its digital site.

Fans of the film will now be able to stream Gladiator II on Paramount Plus starting from the 21st of January in the United States and Canada. A later release date may be revealed for viewers in South America and abroad.

How will digital release help Gladiator II

Gladiator II was made on a budget of $250 million and was expected to earn at least $500 million at the box office. However, the film only managed a $455 million box office collection. Despite boasting big names like Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Paul Mescal, the film failed to leave a mark.

A digital release will certainly help the film earn more even after leaving the big screens. It might also gain viewership and fans on streaming.

Following up on Russell Crowe's Gladiator, the sequel focuses on Commodus’ sister Lucilla's son, Lucius Verus, played by Paul Mescal.

The official synopsis for the film reads,

Years after witnessing the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people.

The film didn't exactly get the support from Crowe one would expect as the actor opened up about feeling "slightly uncomfortable" about the sequel, adding that he had "no say" in it.

Speaking to Kyle Meredith on his podcast, Crowe said,

“I’m slightly uncomfortable, the fact that they’re making another one, you know? Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done. But, a couple of things that I’ve heard, I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no, no. That’s not in the moral journey of that particular character.’ But you know, can’t say anything. It’s not my place. I’m six foot under. So we’ll see what that is like."

Gladiator II will be available for streaming on Paramount Plus from the 21st of January.
