Actress Florence Pugh had a difficult time dealing with trolling. In an interview with British Vogue on September 18, 2024, she shared insights about her romantic life, expressing that she did not regret defending her then-boyfriend Zach Braff in 2020 against online critics. At that point, she felt the need to speak out, as her priority was to protect the people she cared about.
The couple, who were together from 2019 to 2022, faced constant scrutiny during their relationship, particularly due to their significant age gap as Braff is 21 years older than her. Florence Pugh said:
“I had to be public in the past because people were bullying me and bullying my partner. Mine and Zach’s relationship was actually quite private until it was nasty, and I could see the toll that it was taking on him and us and our families.”
Moreover, she found it upsetting to see others making harsh comments about someone she loved, making it essential for her to address the situation. She also acknowledged that any relationship under public scrutiny is bound to face pressure.
Reportedly, the criticism regarding their age gap reached a peak when Pugh shared a birthday tribute to Braff on Instagram in 2020, which quickly attracted numerous comments targeting their age difference.
Florence Pugh admitted to being in a relationship at present in the British Vogue interview but chose not to reveal the person's identity. She shared that they were in the process of understanding their relationship. The actress is taking a more measured approach, allowing the connection to develop naturally rather than rushing into it.
Florence Pugh and Zach Braff worked together in In the Time It Takes to Get There
Braff’s first interaction with Pugh was through X (then Twitter) where he praised her role in Lady Macbeth in 2018. Later in March 2019, they worked on a short film In the Time It Takes to Get There. He directed the project in partnership with Adobe.
Almost one month after the premiere of the short film, Florence Pugh and Zach Braff were seen holding hands in New York City. In November 2019, the duo shared their first photo on Instagram while they were on a Disneyland trip. The next month she confirmed her relationship as a way of responding to a critic.
Pugh was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 Oscars for her role in Little Women. She was seen running into Braff's arms, sharing a kiss before they continued their celebrations. In May, the actress talked about her quarantine routine where she mentioned their efforts to limit takeout to once a week.
In her cover story for Harper's BAZAAR September 2022 issue, Pugh shared that she and Braff quietly ended their relationship and kept the breakup private to avoid online scrutiny. They both felt it was better to handle the separation discreetly, rather than face public reactions. Despite their break-up, they have reportedly stayed friends.
Currently, Florence Pugh is busy with her upcoming film We Live in Time which also features Andrew Garfield. The trailer teases an emotional story with tragedy, centered around an intense yet unconventional love affair sparked by an unexpected meeting between the two characters.
