The Life of Chuck shows filmmaker Mike Flanagan returning with another Stephen King narrative adaptation. Although known for his horror projects, Flanagan's latest film is said to be a life-affirming drama. It premiered at the 2024 TIFF and will soon make its theatrical debut in the United States. Ahead of its wide release, Neon has released its teaser trailer.
The teaser does not show any specific scenes from the film, nor does it offer a clear idea of its plot. It mainly shows Tom Hiddleston's titular character, Chuck, walking down an unnamed street in a few fleeting shots. Jacob Tremblay also makes a brief appearance as the younger Chuck.
The rest of the clip shows a blinking yellow light in a traffic signal beside a clock. While the visuals play out, the background is filled with a ticking sound. It momentarily merges with a sound from a hospital monitor.
It all correlates with the original story by Stephen King, which follows a man with a brain tumor. So, the teaser possibly offers an ominous peek into the life of a man inching toward his death.
The presence of his younger version suggests that he is looking back at his past and reflecting on the life he led until then. So, it makes sense that the dimly lit beginning of the teaser shows two people joining hands, most likely in a hospital.
The Life of Chuck: More Details on the latest Stephen King adaptation by Mike Flanagan
Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck was initially screened last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. The detailed synopsis, per the festival's official website, reads as,
"With The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan takes a detour from the macabre to explore one of Stephen King’s alternate sensibilities in an adaptation that carries the spirit of his most optimistic work. The world feels like it’s ending and everybody’s saying goodbye to Chuck. Wherever Marty (Chiwetel Ejiofor) goes, he can’t get away from Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). His face is showing up on billboards, window signs — and even TV commercials. What’s so special about this seemingly ordinary accountant and why does he warrant such a sendoff?"
It further says,
"Their connection includes Marty’s ex-wife (Karen Gillan), her co-worker, his neighbor, and just about everyone else they know. Chuck’s life story soon begins to unravel in front of us, going back to childhood with grandfather Albie (Mark Hamill), who teaches him about accounting and passes on a love for dancing, all the while keeping him from a prophetic secret in the attic."
Neon, which recently backed Oz Perkins' The Monkey, is also handling the distribution of Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck, slated to be released on June 6, 2025.
