If you missed watching Robert Pattinson on screen, then fans are in for a real treat. The actor will play a double role in Bong Joon-Ho's Mickey 17. The science fiction thriller, which stars Pattinson in the lead role, just released a rare sneak peek, and from what we can see, it looks absolutely promising. The film is an adaptation of Edward Ashton's highly acclaimed novel of the same name and will be Bong Joon-Ho's first film in Hollywood.
The clip, shared by Letterboxd, shows a tense moment in the film as Mark Ruffalo's character erases the memories of one of the Robert Pattinson characters while he chides him with a burning stick. The film will star Pattinson as a reusable clone who is in charge of dangerous tasks that leave him close to death. The only catch is that every time Mickey dies, a newer version of him can be resurrected. The title suggests that the film will focus on Mickey 17, as in; the seventeenth iteration of Mickey. In the sneak peek, we get a glimpse at Mickey 17 and 18, the latter's memory being erased.
The film is director Bong Joon-Ho's first directorial project after the massive success of Parasite. Filming ended in 2023, but it took time to reach theaters. Due to Joon-Ho and Warner Bros. being on different sides of the project and the Hollywood strikes, it has also been rescheduled multiple times. However, the film has finally come together and will hit theaters in less than a month.
More about Mickey 17
The black comedy film stars Pattinson as the titular character, while Mark Ruffalo stars as Hieronymous Marshall. Naomi Ackie will be playing Nasha Adjaye. It also stars Steven Yeun. Toni Colette and Anamaria Vartolomei.
The official synopsis of the film says,
The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.
Considering Joon-Ho's brilliance in the director's chair, fans are excited to see his new venture as he explores the genre of thrillers after his success with horror.
The director also opened up about his choice of casting Pattinson in the lead role, as he told Screen Daily,
“Robert is, of course, known for playing superheroes like Batman, but [I had also seen him in] the Safide brothers’ Good Time and [Robert Eggers’] The Lighthouse. He has demonstrated remarkable talent in such great independent American films, so I had always been interested in him.
He continued,
"The role [of Mickey] demanded duality, shifting between the pitiful and slightly stupid Mickey 17 to the manic yet charismatic Mickey 18, so I had Pattinson in mind from the start. The casting process was relatively easy too, as it seems he wanted to play an oddball character like this.”
This will most certainly be an interesting project between the two, and the film is already buzzing to be a success in theaters. Mickey 17 is set to release on March 7, 2025.
