Actor Bradley Whitford had a few words to say to his former bosses. In an exclusive interview with Variety, published on April 8, 2025, he pointed out the irony of seeing many former collaborators at Trump’s inauguration, remaining quiet as women’s rights were taken away.
He added that while serious global issues like the erosion of democracy and climate change were unfolding, the public focus seemed stuck on less urgent matters like comfortable shoes and perfect teeth. Bradley Whitford expressed strong frustration toward right-wing Christian nationalists, saying their views were rooted in misogyny and punishment.
He also criticized the silence of people in his industry, urging them to speak out against the ongoing issues. Whitford said:
“And Jeff Bezos... f**king speak up!”
Bradley Whitford questioned Jeff Bezos’ silence, highlighting the contrast between past support for marginalized communities and his current lack of response as reproductive rights were being stripped away. He emphasized the real-world impact by referencing the growing number of r*pe survivors unable to access abortion care, calling the situation urgent and not hypothetical.
He also noted that even Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, once thought her dystopian story might be too extreme—yet he felt reality proved otherwise. Speaking about his life, he reflected on his childhood saying:
“My dad had night terrors and went to bed early. So I grew up in a loving home with my mother playing absolutely gorgeous harp music every night and my father down the hall screaming in his sleep.”
Here’s what Bradley Whitford thinks about Joe Biden and the reality of “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Looking back at his first Broadway gig in Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men, he shared that his dressing room was so spacious it felt more comfortable than his actual apartment, so he even brought his dog to stay there. He ended up living in the space and described the whole experience as amazing.
In 2021, Bradley Whitford spoke to Stephen Colbert on the latter’s show. The actor said he loved democracy more than he loved Joe Biden. However, he added:
“It's such a relief to have a President who wants to help people and not need smoke blown up his *ss. That's fantastic but I worry that we cannot get anything done if we don't protect democracy and pass H.R.1.”
Stephen Colbert also asked about his experience on The Handmaid’s Tale to which Bradley Whitford said that working on the show was relaxed and upbeat, despite the dark subject matter. He praised Elisabeth Moss for her emotional performance and noted how cheerful and light she was on set.
He also talked about how kind and polite the Canadian crew was, creating an odd but interesting contrast to the show’s intense and heavy themes.
In March 2025, he was interviewed by Toofab. When asked how it felt to act in The Handmaid’s Tale given the state of the world today, Bradley Whitford pointed out how real-life events were starting to reflect the show’s dystopian themes.
He mentioned that tens of thousands of r*pe victims in the U.S., including minors, have been denied access to necessary healthcare. He emphasized that this wasn’t a fictional scenario, but something happening presently, making the show feel disturbingly close to reality.
