Dogecoin is making a comeback in the world of cryptocurrency in the wake of the presidential elections, and Elon Musk is at the center of it. The coin was spawned in 2013 as a joke by developers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, and its mascot is a dog that says things like "much wow."

As for how Musk is linked to it, in 2022, the billionaire made headlines when he suggested that Twitter should opt for dogecoin as a mode of payment for subscriptions. And, just this month, President Trump named Musk as one of the heads of the “Department of Government Efficiency," which also goes by the acronym DOGE.

So, when Elon Musk took to X to share a black and white image of himself, The Godfather style, with the caption: "The Dogefather" written all over it, the internet went ballistic. Here's how one user reacted:

"Every day this app slowly destroys my mental state and Elon isn't helping."

Others online had a lot more to say:

"Lets get this party started already!!" one user urged.
"This is the first time I hate you! I don’t think this is a good way to promote doge coin! And as a famous people, you should do more about physical not the coins," another stated.
"The Doge father and Space X these are legends of this century," someone else opined.
"Bro should we start hopping on doge? Is it next for u to pump? Let us know!!!" someone else questioned.

More and more chimed in:

"Posting this of yourself is pretty lame, tbh," one user asserted.
"Are you a serious person?" someone else asked, sarcastically.
"LOVE THIS !!!!!!" someone else announced.
"The Dogefather is a truly stunning, elegant, and charismatic man," another claimed.

The internet was ostensibly divided between those who found Elon Musk's image amusing and those who hated it.

Elon Musk brands himself the CEO of Dogecoin

Notably, another “DOGEFATHER” portrait of Musk, that came out on his account today, triggered a 2.92% surge in the value of the coin in the market, according to Crypto News. Just today, $DOGE was trading at $0.3950, while its market cap clocked in at a 4.40% rise, touching $57.55 billion. As for its 24-hour trading volume, it has increased by 25.83% to $9.22 billion, the outlet has reported.

While Elon Musk has thus far avoided directly endorsing the coin, he has joked about it time and again. For example, in April 2019, he hopped on Twitter to reveal his go-to cryptocurrency:

"Dogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency. It’s pretty cool."

Soon after this tweet, the market cap of the coin clocked in at $400 million. Not long after, Musk decided to self-declare himself Dogecoin’s CEO on Twitter. He even began posting memes about the same.

In 2021, Elon Musk also was featured on SNL, where he embodied the character named “Dogefather." Moreover, it was Musk who chose the name for the “Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)."

According to the Trump administration, DOGE will offer the White House “advice and guidance” in matters like driving "large-scale structural reform, and creating an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before”. Musk is all set to play the head alongside former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
