Emilia Perez has been riding the waves of success since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. During its award ceremony, the film's central female cast marked a historic win as they all won the Best Actress award.

Selena Gomez shared this win with her talented co-stars, Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana, and Adriana Paz.

This is her first time working with filmmaker Jacques Audiard, who is not new to the French film festival. Previously, he has won the prestigious Palme d'Or award for his 2015 film, Dheepan. Before that, his 2009 film, A Prophet, won the Grand Prize of the Jury whereas his 1996 film, A Self-Made Hero, won the Best Screenplay award. However, Emilia Perez is his first film breaking grounds in the American award circuit.

Besides Audiard being nominated for his direction and screenplay, the film has been receiving multiple nominations for its impressive acting performances. Gomez has also received multiple nominations, the most recent being at the Golden Globes.

During a recent interview, Audiard spoke about Gomez's performance and great things to say about her commitment to her role.

Emilia Perez: Here's what director Jacques Audiard said about Selena Gomez's role in his film

Emilia Perez follows a moving portrait of four women in Mexico, who seek their own happiness. Gomez plays Jessi, a woman who mysteriously loses her partner after many years of marriage.

Here's what the director said about Gomez's performance as Jessi in Emilia Perez:

“Jessi had a whole story — a young American woman living on the border who belongs to American culture and tries and fails to slip into Mexican culture. The character I’d written in the original treatment was much harder, more cynical. Selena softened the character. She made her more moving. She’s torn because she belongs to another culture, because she loved a man who ultimately left her. She’s fragile. That was brought to this film by Selena.”
