The Assessment, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Alicia Vikander, will be released sooner than expected. A date has been set for its release.

Magnolia Pictures has backed this project, and it is scheduled for a March 21 theatrical release in the United States. It follows a couple's trials and tribulations to have a child at a time when childbirth is regulated.

The film's official logline, per IMDb, reads,

"In the near future where parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple's seven-day assessment for the right to have a child unravels into a psychological nightmare."

The film initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It marked French filmmaker Fleur Fortuné's feature film debut. She has extensive experience in directing music videos for artists like M83, The Avalanches, Lykke Li, and Travis Scott. Thomas and John Donnelly have co-written the film's screenplay.

Elizabeth Olsen (His Three Daughters), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), and Himesh Patel (Yesterday) appear in the central roles. The rest of the cast includes Indira Varma (Disclaimer), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting), Nicholas Pinnock (For Life), Leah Harvey (Sweetpea), and Charlotte Ritchie (Wonka).

The Assessment is going to be Wandavision star Elizabeth Olsen and The Danish Girl star Alicia Vikander's latest feature film project.

The film's detailed summary, per TIFF, reads,

"In the future depicted in The Assessment, everyone gets to live a calm life but the government maintains a strict control of resources. As part of that, and to ensure the world doesn’t become overpopulated, it decides who can and can’t have children."

When speaking about the three central characters, it says,

"Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) are nervous about their application to become parents, but they have everything going for them. They live in a peaceful, secluded home where Aaryan has a studio for his genetic research and Mia maintains a greenhouse as part of her work as a botanical scientist. The two are assigned an assessor named Virginia (Alicia Vikander), who comes to evaluate them in their home over seven days."

It further reads,

"Virginia asks them invasive and awkward questions about everything from how they first met to how often they have sex. But this is just the beginning as Virginia puts Mia and Aaryan through simulations of the potential horrors children can inflict on their parents. As the tests become increasingly abstract and confounding, the right answers seem less obvious and the assessment foments a rift between the couple."

The Assessment is supposed to be out in theaters on March 21, 2025.
