In the wake of Kendrick Lamar's shoutout to Drake during his halftime performance of Not Like Us, Duolingo took to X to upload an image of its mascot, the green owl, with a caption that directly echoed the sentiments:
"SAY DRAKE!"
The internet has since begun reacting to the image, with some users jokingly pointing out that the entity just wanted to incite violence for no apparent reason. Check out what this one user jokingly stated, for example:
"Duo woke up and chose violence."
Check out what the others said:
"Even duolingo, this is generational trauma right here," someone pointed out.
"say “not like us” in spanish," another jested.
"We got Duolingo dissing Drake before GTA 6," one user quipped.
"It's open season on drake lmao," someone else stated.
Even more chimed in:
"Nah at this point Drake has to uninstall Earth.exe," one user quipped.
"This social media person is off the chain," another opined.
"It was drake that murdered duo wasn’t it," someone else theorized.
"Nahhh Drake getting trolled by doulingo is next level," yet another joked.
Users could not help but poke fun at the situation, with some noting that the app's social media account is on fire.
Duolingo announces that its beloved mascot is dead: Read more
On February 11, the app took to X to announce that its mascot, the Owl, was dead.
"It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead," the language learning app posted on social media Tuesday morning. "Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know."
The statement went on:
"We're aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments. If you feel inclined to share, please also include your credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory. We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa's privacy at this time."
In a statement to KDKA-TV, a spokesperson for the company confirmed that the owl is, in fact, dead, though the debacle is nothing but part of a brand marketing campaign.
To keep the gag going, the language-teaching app has updated all of its social media profile pictures to an icon of the owl with Xs for eyes, representing his demise.
