Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho was a crucial part of the first film in the Dune franchise, where he played the role of a Ginaz Swordmaster in the service of the honorable House Atreides. Although the actor didn't return for the film's sequel Dune: Part Two, industry insider Jeff Sneider has reported that Idaho's character will make a return in the franchise's third installment, Dune: Messiah.
Momoa's return isn't all that shocking, as the character does get resurrected in the Frank Herbert book, which inspired the films. In the novel, Idaho returns as a ghola, which are clones made from genetic material. Idaho is resurrected with the help of Hayt's consciousness when he attempts to kill Paul.
In 2024, the actor opened up on his character's future in the franchise as he sat down for an interview with Men's Health where he said
“It’ll be a good future now if Duncan Idaho may have some sort of. You know what we did have? Oh man, I can’t actually say this. I’ll get in trouble. F**k. Well, there was something that was really cool that went into the movie that didn’t make the first one, and it was pretty epic. I’ll try to get it back. I’ll try to get it back in the third one and Duncan drinks Guinness, too."
Dune lead Timothee Chalamet has also previously confirmed Momoa's return to the third film, as he told MTV,
“Momoa will be back. Well, not in this one, but, In Messiah. If you read the book. It’s so weird because they’re so secretive about the script and about the trailer. Well, the books have been out there for 70 years."
More details on Dune: Messiah
Not much has been revealed about the third film in the franchise, but it is well known that Dune: Messiah will be based on Herbert's second novel in the franchise, which is considerably shorter than its predecessor. The second novel is set 12 years after the events of the first and sees Atreides still in power as Emperor of the Known Universe, having killed billions of people when he unleashed the Fremen's deadly jihad on the galaxy.
As for the cast, Timothee Chalamet will return as Paul Atreides, and hopes are high for Zendaya, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, and Florence Pugh. Anya Taylor-Joy is joining the cast as Alia Atreides, Paul's sister. More details on the cast are awaited for now.
The film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and is expected to go into development sometime later this year.
As of now, the Dune: Part Two team is basking in the success of the sequel that has grabbed five nominations at this year's Oscars. The first film also won big at the 2022 Oscars, taking home six awards.
Dune is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
