The How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake seems to be in full swing with an exciting cast. It is directed by Dean DeBlois, half of the directing duo behind the original 2010 animated film.

The 2010 film by DeBlois and Chris Sanders was loosely based on Cressida Cowell's eponymous 2003 novel. This Dreamworks Animation project was received warmly by critics and the audience alike upon its release. So, it is understandable that the fans of the original would have passionate reactions to its live-action remake.

This 2025 project introduces a recent trend of live-action remakes, which includes films like The Lion King, The Jungle Book, Dumbo, and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch. These films have the added advantage of familiarity since the audience already knows what will happen in the film, for the most part. So, there is no burden of a story not working for them.

Especially with films like the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon, where the live-action version looks near-identical to their animated originals, there is a sense of comfort in facing the predictable.

Dreamworks Animation is presumably hoping to work with the same formula for its upcoming project that uses similar emotional beats to the original. Universal Pictures already released a trailer for this upcoming project and now there is a new still floating on the internet.

Let's unpack what this new image tells us about the film.

How to Train Your Dragon: New look unveiled

How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake is bringing back the dynamic duo of Hiccup and Astrid back to the screen. In the animated films, Jay Baruchel voiced Hiccup while America Ferrera voiced Astrid. Now, in the new version, Mason Thames plays the former character whereas Nico Parker plays the latter one.

The picture shows Hiccup visibly afraid of something and Astrid presumably lifting his spirits and giving him the courage to face his fears. While he is anxious, she looks self-assured. The image appears to be from a crucial scene as Hiccup tries to train his dragon.

This is not the first time these two actors will be appearing on the big screen. Thames has appeared in Apple TV+'s For All Mankind and in Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone. Parker appeared in HBO's The Last of Us and the live-action remake of Dumbo. She is the daughter of British actress Thandiwe Newton.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon is scheduled to be released on June 13, 2025, in the USA by Universal Pictures.
