Mel Gibson has been named the special Hollywood ambassador by the newly elected President Donald Trump. The Mad Max actor responded to this news and said he was surprised by it.

Donald Trump was sworn in as President on January 20, 2025. Prior to that, he took to Truth Social to announce that he was appointing Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone, and Jon Voight as Hollywood's 'special ambassadors' to bring back the Golden Age of the Hollywood industry.

Mel Gibson reacts on being appointed as special ambassador

Mel Gibson told USA Today that he was surprised by Donald Trump's appointment. He said,

"I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can."

The Braveheart actor also joked about the news and asked if he would get a residence of the ambassador.

He asked,

"Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?"

Donald Trump had announced the news by writing,

"It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California," Trump wrote Thursday. "They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!"

Trump further wrote:

"These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!"

Earlier, Voight opened up about having touched on some aspects of the Golden Age of Hollywood. He said that the industry has slowly moved away, and currently, it's not in a very good position. Voight said that with the help of the President, things can be restored. He told USA Today,

"Very few films are made here now, but we are fortunate to have an incoming President, who wants to restore Hollywood to its former glory, and with his help, I feel we can get done."

Meanwhile, Mel Gibson appeared in two films in 2024. These include Asif Akbar's crime thriller Boneyard and the adventure horror film Monster Summer. Both these films met with mixed critical response.

He is returning to the director's chair with the action thriller Flight Risk. The film has Mark Wahlberg in the lead role, along with Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace. Flight Risk will be released by Lionsgate on January 24, 2025.
