Singer and songwriter SZA, aka Solána Imani Rowe, was a recent guest on The Drew Barrymore Show. The most interesting highlight of the show was when the singer revealed that one of the songs from her 2017 album, Ctrl, was inspired by the actress.

Barrymore said she was excited to learn that the singer had released a song with her name on the title. The singer replied that it was not only titled after her but also inspired by the actress. Rove said:

“It was inspired by you. It wasn’t just titled after you. The energy that you carry, even my outfit is inspired by the way you have made me feel my entire life.”

Her comment came under the radar of social media users, most of whom joked that the song had nothing to do with Drew Barrymore. For instance, one person commented:

“I don’t see how the song correlates to drew tho but i love it regardless.”

Although social media users acted in surprise after SZA’s revelation, it appears most of them were sarcastic.

“Wait really? I thought that song was about Obama?” a social media user remarked.
“This was very much a on the spot lie and she killed it actually,” an X user noted.
“This kinda sh*t is so powerful to Drew to hear since she feels soooo much and so deeply. Really really nice to watch,” a netizen opined.

Netizens admired the inspiration Rowe got from the actress.

“and drew barrymore by sza is one of the best songs of the century,” a person complimented.
“Never, I didn't think a song about Drew, could actually be about Drew.... Shocking...” an internet user mocked.
“It's so sweet how someone can inspire you to make a song so so good,” an online user remarked.

SZA said she wrote a letter for Drew Barrymore but never sent it

The singer told Barrymore that she once wrote a letter to her but never sent it. The letter highlighted her experience as a young black woman who took inspiration from people like Drew Barrymore. Rowe described the actress as someone who expressed herself and was quirky, adding that she loved how Barrymore talked. She added:

“It just reminds me of all the things about myself that make me nervous but on you it shines so brightly you gave me permission to like be myself and feel like this is so cool and so not whatever like I just love it, all your old photo shoots I look them up like I just you just you have always been a pinnacle to me.”

SZA’s debut album Ctrl reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, she shared the music video for Drew Barrymore, featuring a cameo by the actress herself, who shared a warm, reassuring moment with SZA.

In a 2017 interview with Billboard, SZA described Drew Barrymore as effortlessly casual, radiating positive energy, confidence, and a mix of shyness and vibrancy. She shared that Barrymore's personality inspired the song, as she envisioned various moments of encountering her while writing it.
