Doechii has been at the front and center of the movement that has brought female artists back to the forefront of music. Alongside Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Chapell Roan, Tyla, and others, the Florida native spearheaded a movement that celebrated femininity across the wide spectrum in which it exists.
Following a momentous Grammy’s, where Doechii managed to win in the category for Best Rap Album and brought the house down with an electric performance, her star power kicked into another gear. This prompted the “Denial is a River” artist to give back to her ‘Day 1s’ who were eager for the artist to drop a hidden gem from her social media archives.
The track “Anxiety” was initially released on Doechii’s YouTube channel, and the artist recently announced that she’d be releasing a proper studio version in an act of fan service to acknowledge the people who have gotten her to this point.
Following a tweet making the news official for her fans, Doechii put out the track on all DSPs alongside a visualizer video on YouTube.
“Anxiety” Examined
The track in question features Doechii rapping over a beat that samples Gotye’s unforgettable 2011 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know”. While it has been making the rounds on social media off the heels of her rising popularity and Grammy win, she debuted the record in 2021 via her official YouTube channel.
Since the clip surfaced, it has received massive traction, although it recently hit a fever pitch with Doechii’s newfound success. In the hook, Florida’s freshest face delivers a wildly relatable message before providing some memorable bars throughout in her signature style.
“Anxiety/ Keep on trying me/ I feel it quietly/ Tryna silence me, yeah/ My anxiety/ Can’t shake it off of me/ Somebody’s watching me/ And my anxiety”
Interestingly, Doechii’s original rendition of “Anxiety” shared on YouTube was sampled by Brooklyn’s Sleepy Hallow on Boy Meets World, his 2023 album. This version only had Doechii singing on the hook. Doechii’s new release, by contrast, is solely her canvas, and it shows, with the artist owning every moment of the tune from start to finish. Attentive listeners and keen fans can also clearly note that the Gotye sample in the latest “Anxiety” drop is more of a focus.
Doechii clarified the entire situation in a recently uploaded video, detailing the lore of the song in question and how we got to this point.
