Did The Brutalist use AI as part of the film's production process? Controversy explained 

Brady Corbet's The Brutalist was a winner this award season as it garnered immense praise from critics and fans alike, making its way to some of the biggest film festivals and the winning list of major award shows. Praised for its brilliant storyline and artistic depiction, the period drama centered around Adrien Brody's character as a struggling architect in the United States.

Although the film has been on the receiving end of much appreciation, recent discussions have revealed that AI was an integral part of the film's production.

The editor for The Brutalist, Dávid Jancsó, revealed to Red Shark News that they used artificial intelligence to enhance certain parts of the film.

“I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce. It’s an extremely unique language. We coached [Brody and Jones] and they did a fabulous job but we also wanted to perfect it so that not even locals will spot any difference.”

He further added how the actors' voices were recorded in AI, and Jancsó himself added elements of himself speaking in the AI-generated dialogues.

“Most of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there. We were very careful about keeping their performances. It’s mainly just replacing letters here and there.”

That is not all. The editor also revealed that AI had a hand in the film's ending sequence to create a “series of architectural drawings and finished buildings.”

This revelation has led many to question the film's earlier reception, as the inclusion of artificial intelligence in its production sort of diminishes its brilliance. Although a small addition, it still has had a large impact on the film's finished product.

Jancsó even defended AI's inclusion in the film by saying,

“We should be having a very open discussion about what tools AI can provide us with. There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t been done before. It just makes the process a lot faster. We use AI to create these tiny little details that we didn’t have the money or the time to shoot.”

The Brutalist won big at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards this season. The film took home awards for Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama, Best Director, and Best Motion Picture—Drama. Apart from that, it was also noted as one of the top ten films of the year by the American Film Institute.

As of now, many are criticizing the film's late revelation of AI usage as it adds an element of lack of creativity from the makers' side. This has initiated conversations surrounding authenticity in cinema in the current scenario and how AI will contribute and help evolve it.
