Actor Robert De Niro has become a trending name on X after Oscars 2025 gained traction. On March 3, 2025, the X account “@DiasvowTrump20” shared a video of De Niro saying “F**k Trump” at an award ceremony which led to speculations that the clip was from the Oscars 2025.
However, the video is from the 2018 Tony Awards as the name of the award was displayed on the stage, behind De Niro. As seen in the video, the actor came up to the stage and said:
“I am gonna say one thing, f**k Trump.”
His statement was followed by an uproar from the crowd and most people stood up clapping. De Niro continued:
“It’s no longer down with Trump, it’s f**k Trump.”
According to The Guardian, Robert De Niro was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In 2016, he strongly opposed Trump’s candidacy. During a press conference in May 2024, De Niro expressed his thoughts about New York City saying:
“I love this city. I don’t want to destroy it. Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city but the country and eventually he could destroy the world. But we vowed we would not allow terrorists. I owe this city a lot and that’s why it’s so weird that Donald Trump is just across the street because he doesn’t belong in my city.”
Throughout Trump’s presidency, Robert De Niro continued to voice his disapproval, condemning policies like immigration reform at public events. In a speech at Brown University, he described the state of the country as chaotic and urged students to take action to bring about change.
Robert De Niro received his first Oscar for The Godfather Part II
Robert De Niro won his first Oscar around 49 years ago for The Godfather Part II. Speaking about his experience of learning that he won the first Oscar on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2024, he said:
“I was actually in Italy doing a movie with Bertolucci called 1900 so I got a call about, I guess it was six in the morning or something, their time, that’s nine hours later and so that’s I was shooting so.”
De Niro felt that getting nominated for the award was enough because it is based on comparison whereas it is difficult to pinpoint the differences. His second Oscar was for his role in the 1980 film, Raging Bull.
Donald Trump has shared X posts about Robert De Niro in the past. In 2018, Trump wrote:
“Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received to many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be "punch-drunk." I guess he doesn't realize the economy is the best it’s ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country. Wake up Punchy!”
Trump also criticized Robert De Niro on Truth Social claiming his acting skills declined and that his reputation has suffered. He mocked De Niro for relying on a teleprompter and using offensive language, calling it disrespectful to the country.
Trump also accused him of being irrelevant in Hollywood and blamed him for the decline of the Academy Awards. He suggested that De Niro should focus on his struggles instead of criticizing others.
