In February, an anonymous donor deposited $30,000 into Luigi Mangione's legal fund on GiveSendGo, to help the accused in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, to defend himself against federal and state charges.
The fundraising account has now reached $641,795. The anonymous donor noted the reason behind the high sum saying:
"I never needed to worry about affording med care. But I am here bc, even among the affluent, it is clear that from the motion to dismiss Adams' charges to perp walk, the case is likely politicized. Makes me highly doubtful of any claimed evidence and pursuit of capital panishment. CP, esp, would personally & strongly tilt me in favor or defense; the motives are suspect & due process lacking."
The donor allegedly referred to the New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is facing federal bribery charges after his extradition from Pennsylvania. The Department of Justice submitted a motion to drop the case on February 14.
More donations pour in for Luigi Mangione's defense fund
The recent $30,000 donation from an anonymous donor isn't the first time someone has made a huge donation on Luigi Mangione's GiveSendGo page. On February 17, another anonymous person donated $11,000 to the legal fund, citing:
"The DP should never be politicized. and I am concerned that, especially given the DP EO, it may continue to be for this case. I am also concerned about the severe infringement on the defendant's right to a fair trial and due process, particularly since his juries are effectively pre-tainted."
Mangione has recently received payments of $6,300, $5,700, $5,000, $2,000 and more. He has acknowledged the support for his funds, releasing a statement from jail:
"I am overwhelmed by - and grateful for - everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support. Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial and even class divisions."
Luigi Mangione is accused of shooting United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, on December 4, 2024 outside of the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. Mangione is charged for two counts of stalking, one count of murder through use of firearm and a firearm offense. Lugi is also facing state charges in New York and Pennsylvania and has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.
His next appearance in federal court is scheduled for March 19, and his next court date in the New York state case is scheduled for June 26.
