The Unlove You singer-songwriter Jennifer Nettles is the star of Amazon Prime’s recently released action-horror series, The Bondsman. The Exorcist: Believer actress is starring with the Loverboy actor-filmmaker Kevin Bacon.

Jennifer Nettles is also known as one-half of the country music duo Sugarland, which she co-founded as a band in 2002 with Kristian Bush and Kristen Hall. The trio made music together for three years until Hall’s departure. Nettles and Bush, after working for years, also announced a hiatus in 2012.

The country music duo reunited with a single track in 2017. Kristian and Jennifer also dropped another studio album to mark their reunion. Last year, they had another reunion with a tour and a new EP release. As of this writing, neither Jennifer Nettles nor Kristian Bush has announced Sugarland’s breakup.

A few days back, The Bondsman co-stars announced the release of a collaborative album for their Amazon Prime series. Hell and Back, set to release on April 4, features Bacon’s collaboration with Nettles instead of Sugarland.

Hall's lawsuit, hiatus, reunion, and more about Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush’s duo, Sugarland

After co-founding Sugarland in 2002, the country music trio dropped their only album, Twice the Speed of Life, together in 2004. In the following year, Kristen Hall parted ways with Sugarland, while the other two issued a statement saying,

“Kristen has decided that she wants to stay home and write songs, and we support her in that decision.”

After Hall’s unexpected exit, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush continued garnering success with their subsequent albums. They dropped Enjoy the Ride as their first album as a country music duo. However, in 2008, Kristen Hall filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against her former band members.

The folk rock and country musician alleged that she had been “excluded” from the group's profits after her departure, despite having an agreement. It was also alleged that the band owed Hall around $14 million in profits, but both parties ultimately settled before going to trial.

Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush continued dropping albums, which included Love on the Inside, Gold and Green, and The Incredible Machine. After 2012, the Sugarland twosome decided to go on a hiatus and focus on solo careers. Following the break, The Righteous Gemstones star also concentrated on her acting career.

In a 2019 interview with Country Living, she opened up about the hiatus,

“I was ready for something different, and ready to make brave new steps in my life and my career and so I did. It’s pretty simple.”

Previously, around the release of her solo album That Girl, Jennifer had voiced similar views during a 2014 conversation with The Denver Post,

“It was getting to a point, for me at least, in Sugarland that I didn’t want to stagnate artistically. I didn’t want to become a caricature, which is super easy to happen, especially when you put success in the equation. And I wanted to push myself and shake it up and do something different.”

During the chat, Jennifer Nettles also spoke about exploring “something new” as a solo artist,

“I made a decision to leave myself open to exploring something new as an artist with this solo project. Consequently, I wanted to honor that and to really show a part of myself that maybe I hadn’t been able to access when I was collaborating in Sugarland.”

Sugarland reunited years later with the single Still the Same in 2017. The following year, Nettles and Bush dropped another album, Bigger. Subsequently, they again shifted their focus back to solo careers before getting back together in 2024. They co-headlined Take Me Home Tour with Little Big Town and dropped an extended play – There Goes the Neighborhood – under Big Machine Records.
