The National Board of Review has named Wicked as the Best Picture of 2024, and fans are conflicted, to put it mildly. The group is seen as a major indicator that an Oscar win may be imminent. The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and as reported by The Guardian, it has already made a staggering $356m on a global scale since it came out last month.

Regardless, the internet felt there were a lot more options to pick from. Here's what one user pointed out:

"im so serious did everyone forget that dune 2 came out this year"

Others also weighed in:

"but they told me the movie will flop-," someone jokingly noted.
"but film twitter said that the coloring was terrible. how can this be true?" another user asked.
"Deserved!! But y’all were dragging it because of the colors used…" a third person echoed.
"well, it should have gone to both with wicked and dune 2," someone claimed.

The comments didn't end there, with some users expressing excitement over the same:

"IS THE ROAD TO BEST PUCTURE STARTING FOR WICKED LIKE OMG????? THIS IS CRAZY????" one user exclaimed.
"That's fantastic news! "Wicked" being named Best Picture of 2024 by the National Board of Review is a huge achievement. It’ll be exciting to see how it performs in the upcoming award season," someone else tweeted.
"Deserved!! But y’all were dragging it because of the colors used…" yet another pointed out.
"Marvelous movie, great acting by all the artists, wonderful songs. Wicked have everything to become the best. Well deserved sucess," a fourth person opined.

The internet was visibly divided on just which film should have nabbed the winning title.

Wicked director names best of the year, NBR president lauds his "remarkable cinematic vision"

The National Board of Review also bestowed its Best Director award to the musical's director, Jon M. Chu. Per The Guardian, NBR president, Annie Schulhof, gave her opinion on the same:

"Wicked represents the pure magic that movies can bring to audiences. Every detail is beautifully crafted and designed, the actors are all exceptional and the music is second-to-none – together it adds up to a transporting experience like no other. The NBR is proud to honor director Jon M. Chu and his remarkable cinematic vision."

As for the Top Acting prizes, they went to Daniel Craig for Best Actor in Queer, and the female counterpart went to Nicole Kidman for her work on Babygirl. Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor in A Real Pain, and Elle Fanning was named the Best Supporting Actress in A Complete Unknown.

As for the ten films dubbed the best of this year, apart from the blockbuster musical, here they are, in alphabetical order: Anora, Babygirl, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Gladiator II, Juror #2, Queer, A Real Pain and Sing Sing. Notable omissions include Emilia Perez, Nickel Boys and The Brutalist.
