Matty Healy and Azealia Banks got into a heated exchange on X on December 3, when the latter said Healy's friend, singer Charli XCX isn't as pretty as she used to be. The two spat harsh words at each other, with Healy calling Banks "jealous" and a "failure."
Notably, this isn't the first time the two have gone neck and neck. In May 2023, right after mega pop star Taylor Swift broke up with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, Banks took to Instagram to warn her against getting involved with Healy. She urged her to opt for someone “much cooler." She wrote in her stories:
"Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. He’s not on the level of powerful p–s u worked HELLA Hard To build. Ugh, so many much cooler People in music to work with."
She also referred to Matty Healy as a "full incel.”
“You cannot be letting him climb the rich white c*****e mountain sis,” she concluded her post.

Matty Healy threatens to slap Azealia Banks, claims she's nothing but a hater
It is unknown just when the two began hating on each other, but the most prominent exchange goes back to May 2023, the same month she warned Taylor about Healy. During his appearance on the Adam Friedland Show, Matty Healy cracked jokes at singer Ice Spice's expense.
Parts of the episode had to be taken down given how offensive it was, and though Matty Healy later apologized for his words, Banks called him out. She took to Instagram stories once again to call him a "lame poser."
“Does Matt Healy know that no one thinks The 1975 makes good music and that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing,” she penned. “He’s clearly so pressed that a black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and more money than him.”
She went on to call Healy an “outrageous small white opinionated male musician” and called into question what he knew about the industry itself.
“Does he know that black women are more coveted in the industry because there’s BIG BUSINESS in female rap,” she stated. “You’re not a star, nor are you good at whatever this crappy a– mid-2000’s indie pitchfork darling fantasy you’re trying to sell. Ice Spice has MILES more originality than you will ever.”
As for Tuesday's exchange, it all started when Banks made pointed remarks about Charli XCX's appearance since her breakout year, i.e. 2014.
“Charli used to be soooo pretty. Ugh. Boaaa, I swear them Weho gays be having the girls questioning themselves meanwhile they all scraping k off a cookie sheet, eating cold bossanova and sharing panties. Tuh.”
Matty Healy, however, was not pleased, as he penned a scornful tweet:
"Azealia you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to your ‘reads’. All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people. I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.”
Banks shot back in a follow-up tweet, noting that Charli looks like Frankenstein" to her, and claimed they both did drugs together. Healy then retorted with an intense threat:
"I'll f******slap you so hard I'll get a Guiness world record for the highest a rat some bitch calls a wig has ever flown."
However, Healy quickly backtracked a bit and said:
"Nah I can't be saying I'm gonna hit a girl that's insane I'm sorry. You just can't keep being so mean about my mates and my mrs it's really hurtful gets me well defensive."
He also deleted the questionable tweet in question, noting that it "was not cool even if I was angry."
Matty Healy and Charli XCX have been friends for years, with the latter being engaged to Healy's bandmate, George Daniel. Earlier this year, as reported by Us Weekly, she referred to Healy as a "brother." She said, during an October interview with Zane Lowe, that she has "an endless amount of respect for him as a songwriter and him as a person.”
