Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera, two of Hollywood’s renowned actors, shared a unique connection that many fans might not be aware of. They were first seen together after meeting on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, in 2010 and dated for almost two years.
Their relationship began thanks to the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, where Cera played the lead character Scott Pilgrim while Plaza played Julie Powers, a snarky friend of Scott’s sister.
Plaza confirmed that the duo were dating in 2016, during an appearance on RuPaul's What’s the Tee with Michelle Visage podcast, saying she and Cera were together for about a year and a half. In the podcast, Plaza expressed her feelings towards her ex and said:
“We’re still really good friends. He’s just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language. … He’s one of the funniest people I know.”
Supposedly the duo was also very close to getting married. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Michael Cera explained that they were driving through the city when they suddenly decided to take a detour and get married on the spot.
They even fantasized about getting a marriage certificate in an Elvis-themed chapel, then immediately divorcing so they could jokingly introduce one another as “my ex-husband” and “my ex-wife.”
Plaza and Cera have since gone separate ways. Aubrey Plaza tied the knot with writer-director Jeff Baena in 2021, after a long-running romance, which began in 2011. Cera, on the other hand, is with his longtime partner, Nadine, who he married in 2018.
Exploring Aubrey Plaza’s relationship with Jeff Baena
The relationship between Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena started in 2011, when their paths first crossed over a game of Balderdash. Plaza was already a well-known actress by then, through her breakout role on Parks and Recreation, while Baena was starting out as a screenwriter and director.
Aubrey Plaza, who was previously linked to actor Michael Cera, went on to explain in an interview that meeting Baena was a life-changing experience.
Their creative partnership began with Baena’s directorial debut, Life After Beth (2014), a zombie comedy that starred Plaza. Aubrey Plaza was supposedly the one who motivated Baena to do this movie, according to People Magazine.
Their professional partnership extended to projects like The Little Hours (2017), a medieval comedy, and Spin Me Round (2022). The couple’s most significant project together was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Baena developed the Showtime anthology series Cinema Toast (2021).
In May 2021, Plaza posted on Instagram that she married Jeff Baena and wrote ‘my darling husband’ as the caption. According to reports, their wedding was held privately in 2021.
