Deadpool Comic book artist and writer Rob Liefeld has publicized his choice to cut ties with Marvel Comics after working for over three decades over a podcast titled Robservations along with an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The creator of Deadpool and Cable recently talked about his dissatisfaction with the company, especially during the July movie premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine. Liefeld claims that he was intentionally disregarded at the premier event, was rejected access to the afterparty, and was ignored by Kevin Feige.

He talked about his disappointment by stating that:

“Kevin Feige does not treat comic book creators well.”

Liefeld's Frustrations with Marvel and Deadpool & Wolverine premiere controversy

At the movie premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, Liefeld looked forward to attending the afterparty—as per tradition with the earlier film events that featured Wade Wilson. However, he learned that neither he nor his family members were on the guest list.

On his Robservations podcast, Liefeld communicated his feelings by saying:

“It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me.”

Adding to his irritation, Liefeld recalled seeing Feige at the premiere but received no appreciation from the Marvel Studios head. He also stated that the professional pictures taken with the film’s creative unit were deleted.

It is sometime soon after the premiere, Liefeld made up his mind to cut ties with Marvel, stating:

“I’ve received the message, and the message is clear.”

Nevertheless, a tense environment between Liefeld and Marvel had been up and running long before the premiere. In 2024, Liefeld attempted to communicate with Marvel via an email, pleading for special credit on the new Wade Wilson and Logan movie along with inquiring about promotional prospects. However, he did not hear back from the Studio.

In his email, he writes:

“Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create …the world of Deadpool — there are no films to shoot.”

Liefeld did not ask for economic compensation but rather highlighted that comic book creators should be given more appreciation and should be treated with basic respect. His request was allegedly not met in the way he had hoped for.

Liefeld is certain of the fact that this email is what led to his rejection from the premiere afterparty.

When asked about Kevin Feige by The Hollywood Reporter, Liefeld says:

“Do I think he can improve his relationship with comic creators? Yes.”

Given that Liefeld is slightly acknowledged in the new Wade & Logan movie, he took note of a severe difference in his treatment associated with the previous Deadpool films that launched under 20th Century Fox.

He recollected being enthusiastically involved in test screenings and marketing chats for Deadpool and its second installment, stating:

“They had me along for the ride… I was happy to be there.”

Despite the constant strain, Liefeld has been constantly promoting the new D&W movie and hosting movie screenings for Marvel fans.

However, his finishing Marvel comic titled, Deadpool Team-Up No. 5, is set to release in the upcoming week, making this the end of his long-term association with Marvel comics.
