The lukewarm reaction Captain America: Brave New World is getting at the box office seems to have gotten the concern and attention of Rob Liefeld, who co-created Deadpool, as he took aim at Marvel head Kevin Feige. Liefeld urged Feige to step down from his position while pointing out all the unsuccessful projects Marvel has put out after Endgame.
Going on X, Liefeld wrote:
“Get Feige off the mound. He’s spent.”
The tweet was in response to news about Brave New World's recent drop in earnings at the box office. The film fell 82.4% after its opening, earning only $7.2M at the box office.
The creator further elaborated on his concerns as he reposted multiple posts about the film's downfall and posted another thread where he wrote:
"As shared by @ScottMendelson, MCU is on an extended downside. This is beyond a trend, it’s become the norm. If this was sports, Feige would be removed. Marvel brand is like Dodgers, Lakers, Yankees, Celtics, coaches that win championships are removed a year later when the results are disappointing."
He reposted another statement by Scott Mendelson, who happens to be a box office analyst, as he added:
"Box Office analyst @ScottMendelson lays it all out. It’s not a secret and it’s beyond a trend. It’s the norm now. 8 movies crash over the last 3 years. Don’t we want better movies? You get the curiosity crowd then plunge."
Rob Liefeld's Deadpool & Wolverine happened to be one of the biggest films Marvel made after Endgame and saw immense success at the box office. The film earned a whopping $1,337,791,922 worldwide and was the second-highest-grossing film of 2024. Despite this, Liefeld and Marvel parted ways soon enough as tensions between Feige and him grew, leading to their separation.
Why Rob Liefeld left Marvel
Liefeld claimed to have gotten snubbed at the premiere of Deadpool &Wolverine, which led to him cutting ties with the studio. He added that Feige ignored him on the red carpet and didn't even invite him and his family to the after-party.
Speaking on the Robservations podcast, which was titled ‘Marvel: Access Denied!’, the creator talked about how the situation embarrassed, diminished, and defeated him.
Further continuing his stance about Marvel's poor treatment of creators, Liefeld added:
“Marvel’s treatment of creators has never been their strength. Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create — and in this specific case, the world of Deadpool — there are no films to shoot. No blockbusters to distribute. … I am not the easy button at Staples. I am the human imagination behind it all. Comic book creators cannot continue to be relegated as afterthoughts. This is easy to address. Unless I reach out to address it, it will never manifest.”
