James Gunn has opened up about the delay in the release of The Batman 2. The much-anticipated superhero flick was earlier supposed to be released in 2026. However, its new date of release will be October 1, 2027. The DC Studios chief has now come with his side of the reasoning as to why the release was pushed.
The Peacemaker creator reminded viewers about the year gaps that the Terminator, Alien, Avatar, Incredibles, and Top Gun sequels have had.
James Gunn defends The Batman 2 delay
On his official Threads account, James Gunn defended the push of The Batman 2 release date by stating that the script of the film is not ready yet. He further stated that Matt Reeves is working on the script, and after it's done, the pre- and post-production of the superhero film will take around two years.
Responding to a user's query if the news of the delay is true, Gunn wrote:
"Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn't a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films."
Gunn further defended the delay by pointing out how several sequels in the past have had major gaps in release.
He wrote,
"To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3."
The Batman 2 filming to take place in 2025
It has been reported that Warner Bros. Pictures will release The Batman 2 on October 1, 2027. Matt Reeves, who is directing the film, told Variety that the shooting will commence in the year 2025. He told Variety in December 2024:
"We're finishing the script. We're going to be shooting next year."
The sequel will have Robert Pattinson returning as the titular caped crusader. Besides him, the film will also have Colin Farrell portraying The Penguin, who is a villain in the story. Farrell garnered acclaim for his performance as the character in the spin-off miniseries The Penguin.
The Batman 2 is expected to take place right after the events of the first film as Gotham City is ravaged by a flood caused by Riddler. There were also reports that the title of the film could be The Batman Part II.
